    These have some additional disadvantages to SQL based integrations that you haven't touched on:

    • Increased risk of "Record Updated by another User" type errors because the incoming code doesn't respect the role of the ROWSTAMP field - I explain the role of the ROWSTAMP field here - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/understanding-what-bmxaa8229w-record-object-idnumber-has-mark-robbins/
    • Increased risk that the database knowledge will be abused - I have seen non-Maximo interface developers create serious data problems because they had access to the database structure but they didn't know that the Java classes had validation rules that specifically prevented the actions that they were recommending
    • IBM Support may not work on any PMR associated with a record that has been updated using SQL - IBM Support know that backend SQL can cause significant problems and they are able to close a case without providing any help
    • Increased risk of deadlocks if Maximo is running at the time

    Direct SQL is best used as part of an initial dataload e.g. to transfer records when upgrading a system / populating history tables. Ideally it should be used when the system is not available - this removes the risk of the records being updated when another user is trying to use them

    The MIF also supports other input formats e.g. reading files containing XML / CSV. It can also be called via customisations e.g. custom crontasks.

    In my experience the MIF is the best solution for ongoing transactions. It does add complexity it also provides benefits e.g. standardised way to configure the interface and management tools/processes.

    The message tracking application can offer significant benefits when you are trying to understand how records have been updated by an interface. It takes a little time to setup to get the optimal solution but it is worth the effort

    Thanks, this is really helpful.

    I'm currently working on a Maximo integration and, interestingly, we've taken a bit of a different approach. I'd love for you to take a quick look and share your thoughts-it would be great to get your feedback.

    Here's our use case:
    We need to fetch asset data from an external system and create corresponding assets in Maximo. If the same data is received again, we want to update the existing asset. This process needs to run at regular intervals, and we also need to maintain a checkpoint to track progress.

    We initially explored using MIF but ran into a few limitations:

    • The external system requires OAuth for authentication.

    • Mapping the API response to Maximo's Asset object structure was more complex than expected.

    Because of this, we decided to build the entire solution using an automation script. The script:

    • Handles data fetching and mapping.

    • Creates or updates assets directly, without relying on MIF components.

    • Runs at regular intervals using a CRON task.

    While this approach works well overall, we've run into two main challenges:

    1. Checkpoint storage: We're unsure where to persist the checkpoint (in our case, a page number indicating how far we've fetched data).

    2. Logging: The automation script logs are visible during test runs, but when executed via CRON, we only see the run status-no detailed logs. This makes it difficult to validate if the script executed as expected.

    Would really appreciate any suggestions or guidance you might have on these issues.
