We have a requirement on having barcode or rfid present in physical asset which will have serialnum value. 

Is there a way to scan this serial number value from barcode and find the associated asset in Maximo mobile ? 

We understand the barcode scanner is available OOB on ASSETNUM or ITEMNUM fields, but we would like to extend it for other existing or custom fields. 

Please let me know your inputs.

When we have the single search box (such as on the list page) and you type or scan a barcode/QR code, those automatically filter on everything where the attribute is flagged as searchable="true". It's not clear to me which application or page you're talking about but in the out of the box ASSETMOBILE application, we have serialnum flagged as searchable out of the box. In other applications such as TECHMOBILE, I'm not sure if we have it configured but assuming we do on the dswolist datasource (something like asset.serialnum--serialnum since we need to alias it to move it up to the main object) then it should work.

If you are talking about for filling in a field (using one of our smart-input controls such as on the create asset page), any input can have the barcode/QR code scan enabled for it.
