MAS App Point Queries

  • 1.  MAS App Point Queries

    Posted Thu January 30, 2025 06:06 PM

We have 300 App points shown as available in the Suite Administration.

    • Is there any percentage of these app points that are consumed for the install and infrastructure?
    • If a user is tagged as Authorized, does that automatically reduce the available App Points from the pool, irrespective of whether the user is logged on or not?

    Hi Tom

    1) Yes, some app points can be consumed for the installation depending on which add-on you install. Some products consume install AppPoints. For example, if you install Maximo spatial, this will require 20 AppPoints. IBM Maximo Civil Infrastructure requires 50 AppPoints.

    2) An Authorized user consumes AppPoints from the pool, it is reserved for them. This will happen irrespective of whether the user is logged in or not. If you want the AppPoints to be consumed only when they log in, then you need to use a Concurrent user licensing model.

    Thanks @Aneesh Joseph.

On point 1, I take it that unlike the product App Points,  the install App Points are once-off?

    Hi Tom,

    > On point 1, I take it that unlike the product App Points,  the install App Points are once-off?

Yes, you're right. That's what is meant by reserving the app points, they are used for the installation and taken out of the app points pool, hence, concurrent users cannot use them anymore. Also theoretically uninstalling the add-on like spatial should free up those reserved app points. In practice uninstalling can be very difficult due to various extensions in the SQL database.

    Hi Tom,
For point 1,  AppPoints are reserved for installed products and adapters.
For example, the Oracle Adapter is allocated a total of 80 AppPoints. These points are reserved at the time of installation. For instance, if Spatial is installed, it will allocate 20 out of the 300 available AppPoints. The remaining 280 AppPoints will be available and can be consumed under an Authorized or Concurrent user model.
    2. For users with authorized entitlements, the AppPoints are permanently reserved for those users.
You can find more details in the IBM Licensing Guide here - https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/masv-and-l/continuous-delivery?topic=premises-licensing

One "fine print" addition: installation AppPoints are only consumed for the production environment. Non-prods do not consume App Points for installing MAS components, but You still need AppPoints for users accessing non-production instances.

    Hi Witold,

I want to add to your clarification as it's incomplete and might lead to incorrect interpretation.

    1. Non-prods do not consume App Points for installing MAS components but only if you have the same component installed in the production environment. You can find it in https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/masv-and-l/continuous-delivery?topic=premises-licensing#licensing__license_ratio_user_type__title__1 specifically:

    > Program Installs of a component that is used as part of the Licensee's internal development and test environment with at least one installation of the same component in the production environment.

    2. You still need AppPoints for users accessing non-production instances. However if you use a shared app points pool across multiple environments and the user is logged in on one environment, logging in on another environment will not consume the app points the second time. You can find it in https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/masv-and-l/continuous-delivery?topic=requirements-sharing-common-services-across-instances

    > However, if you have a user defined in one of the Maximo Application Suite instances instances that has the same name and entitlement as a user on the other Maximo Application Suite instances instance, that user can log in to both instances and the app points are only deducted once.

    Hi Tom,

Whenever you install a MAS Add-on or Industry Solution, it immediately consumes the required App Points from the available pool of MAS App Points. The same applies to authorized users as well.

For more details on MAS licensing, please refer to the attached PDF.

    Thanks  @Aiman Ansari @Ivan Lagunov @Witold Wierzchowski @Rakesh Kumar

Assuming that we are talking about a production instance, I understand that any MAS Manage Add-ons and Industry solution components will consume App Points every calendar month.  However, the App Points consumed for installing MAS Manage should only be consumed the first calendar month, and then should be available back in the pool?

Add-ons and industry solutions don't always consume app points. For example, Transportation and Service Provider have no installation app points associated with them, whereas Spatial will consume 20 app points. That consumption is not on a monthly basis, it is permanent. For example, if you have 300 app points and install Spatial, 20 points will be consumed and only 280 will be available for users...permanently.

If you are curious where all those reserved/authorized AppPoints are being used I recommend checking your SLS database. The licenses collection stores records for every authorized user and installed product. If you do a filter for reserved = true you can see all the records. The users are straight forward and the trickiest part is converting the productId to the number of AppPoints that represents. The products table holds this mapping. For installed products you will also see records in the licenses collection. The Spatial product for example gets two records int he licenses collection when installed. I believe one consumes 15 AppPoints and the other 5 AppPoints to reserve the full 20 AppPoints required for an install of Spatial.
