Which Maximo modules/applications do you use, and what is the overall theory behind the use of Maximo for you or your customers? Here at Kinder Morgan Inc., Maximo first and foremost is a compliance system, although various pockets of the company are doing more asset /maintenance management and/or some inventory management.

One of the biggest challenges for those of us managing the IBM Maximo system here, is to try to manage the various needs and requests from our user base of over 3000 potential users, all within a single instance and database. Do you have any tips on how we might streamline how we manage our user base and requests from multiple groups?

Create internal User Groups headed by a Super User, based upon functional roles/processes (maintenance, operations, procurement, finance etc) or specific Maximo applications.

Allow all Users to create requests for changes and these will be clarified and endorsed/rejected by the User Group.

This will allow all requests to be peer reviewed, sanity checked and any potential duplicates (usually same outcome but written differently) .

Then only reviewed and approved requests can be added to your Change Control Process for action!

    Wayde,

Have you established data standards, Asset, work and inventory policies and agreed business processes?

Specifically from my experience the presence of business processes drives the system set up. Else it becomes a free for all and users cannot move to a new team in the same company without having to relearn Maximo.

Sometimes it's a cart and horse things since Maximo drives certain data management requirements when used out of the box.

Having said that, maximo relates to 'best' practices in a pretty robust manner and you should ensure the community has an undersanding of how the system works and then you ask why they want the "something" special. Believe me when I say that in 20 years of working with Maximo everyone has something special they must have the system deliver. Once they are all in line with a process, some of the special needs go away and the transition to 'standardised' data management with the system becomes easier to deliver and manage.

    Hope these thoughts are helpful

    Geoff
