I’ve tried to load the various examples/theater/*.xml files into my 3.1.1.1 Tamino using the examples/PLAY.tsd, but it all a bit dodgy. I can’t seem get to all the files loaded in.

I was wondering if anybody else has had similar difficulties.

someone recently pointed out to me,
that the shakespeare examples are in some
inconsistent state. Some of the files are
missing the xml header:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>

Your problems may be connected with this.
What tool are you using for loading the
documents. What exact error do you encounter?
