  • 1.  Leaves hierarchy disappearing

    Hi

    We have had instances where the Leaves hierarchy has disappeared. It seems random and we don't know why as no one has deleted it.

    Is this something anyone else has seen?

    When you say disappeared, gone from the list under the dimension in PAW?

    Not available in the set editor?

    Not on the disk?

    All of the above?

    Something else?

    Hi,

    Theoretically the "leaves" hierarchy is the backbone that keeps a dimension with multiple hierarchies together.

    But it only gets created if you do have multiple hierarchies; so are the ones that are missing definitely things that were there before? Or is it perhaps just some dimensions don't have a leaves hierarchy and others do?

    Also worth noting that }DimensionSecurity now applies to each hierarchy individually, so someone could just remove access from viewing the leaves hierarchy (unless you have admin access of course.)

    Yes this is with admin access.

    As Declan says, the Leaves hierarchy was created to be used as a backbone for creating the other hierarchies and their roll-ups.

    That process will work fine, then occasionally it will fail because the Leaves hierarchy has just disappeared.

    It seems random so not repeatable, but we have noticed it in more than one environment.

    I ran into this issue ~2 years ago maybe. It appears that when you have ONLY the same-name hierarchy and the Leaves hierarchy in a dimension, the Leaves hierarchy will disappear upon server restart.

    The practice I adopted was just always ensuring a "dummy" alternate hierarchy was created during the main dim build process for any dimensions that were not going to actually have legitimate additional hierarchies, just to make that stop happening.

    In this scenario where there appears no logical explanation to the odd behaviour and until it is resolved, you may want to consider updating the ALLLEAVESHIERARCHYNAME property within }DimensionProperties cube and see if it helps.

    IS it in fact the case? Again, I did some pretty extensive investigation due to my paranoia about data loss and, at least in my experience, that is the ONLY scenario under which I observed this happening. It has never happened to me outside of the very specific situation of 'restart the server, dimension only has main hierarchy and leaves hierarchy.'

    Fortunately, once we figured that out, the fix is pretty easy if a little bit ugly (I finally settled on just creating and keeping an empty hierarchy called 'Validation' since it looked prettier than '}Temp' or 'zzDummy.')
