  • 1.  Hierarchy Sort Order

    Posted Wed January 13, 2021 11:13 AM
I am editing the default hierarchy on one of my dimensions and am trying to move an element up.
I get a message saying: Hierarchy is sorted automatically, see hierarchy properties.

The elements are sorted in a different sequence to what I have in Perspectives e.g.
Gross Margin with Revenue the Cost of Sales in Perspectives, PAW has Gross Margin with Cost of Sales then Revenue (components sorted alphabetically) - Don't confuse with sorting the actual named hierarchies - only have one and trying to sort members therein.

The }HierarchyProperties cube does not seem to be the right place to tweak this.  I also cannot see any options when clicking the kebab menu next to the hierarchy or the dimensions menu.

I could run HierarchySortOrder(DimName, HierName, CompSortType, CompSortSense,ElSortType , ElSortSense); and set it to manual but curious if I am missing the option somewhere or if it does not exist.

I went through the 702 pages of the PAW documentation but may have missed it.

Would appreciate some guidance on doing this in PAW, if any one has some pointers. Thanks in advance.

    Hi George

It is the }DimensionProperties cube that you need. You will see your named hierarchy there as
Dim:Hier eg region:MyHier. You need to create at least one Named Hier before this happens.

    DimProp for Hierarchy Sorting

I have been working with Named Hierarchies in TM1 for over a year now. There are a lot of compromises where existing dimension specific cubes have been updated to put in Dim:Hier.

You will find the same in }HierarchyProperties

There is still that rather confusing dimension }Hierarchies with the single element Hierarchy0. I am guessing that someone in IBM finally realised that the approach of having a cube with a }Dimensions dim and a }Hierarchies dim would not work as not all dimensions will have the same hierarchies. An alternative might have been to make consolidations in the }Dimensions dim so you would have eg

    region
       region (the classic hier)
leaves (the standard hier of base level elements)
       MyHier (an example Named Hier)

However, that might have conflicted with too many existing applications, so I guess that is why IBM went with Dim:Hier.

Thanks very much for the feedback Paul - missed the dim:hierarchy in the }DimensionProperties cube as I do not have a name hierarchy currently.

I will go and fiddle around and see what happens - was hoping for a nice right-click, Set Elements Order option somewhere like on the Hierarchy Options menu when you are editing the Hierarchy.
