Beginners should check out the many videos on YouTube for starters. Get a developer edition of DataPower along with a free client such as Curl, postman, or SoapUI with MockUI to practice building services.

As for becoming an expert, explore the XMI/RMI interface and develop some automation to familiarize yourself on how DataPower could fit into a production environment. Finally, learn about how DataPower is deployed in a cloud environment to support other products such as APIc.

    Free resources on DataPower ...
... quite a few IBM Redbooks, some quite old, but many still useful:

Also, you might want to attend some IBM courses, not free, but you
might end up with me teaching you!

Just to expand on Tom's post, the original 2008 version IBM WebSphere DataPower SOA Appliance Handbook 1st Edition is a good starting point.  I did a quick check on Amazon and it says there are some used copies available at what appears to be a nominal cost.  The 2nd Edition 5 part series that Tom mentions are from 2015 and are also available on Amazon.  Instead of the huge 900 page 1st Edition, the 5 volumes are roughly 200+ pages.

    - IBM DataPower Handbook Volume I: DataPower Intro & Setup: Second Edition
    - IBM DataPower Handbook Volume II: DataPower Networking: Second Edition

    - IBM DataPower Handbook Volume III: DataPower Development: Second Edition

    - IBM DataPower Handbook Volume IV: DataPower B2B: Second Edition

    - IBM DataPower Handbook Volume V: DataPower Security Hardening: Second Edition

When I first started working with DataPower in 2007 The Handbook was THE resource but was also written in the DataPower firmware 3.8 days.  Much has been added in features and support since then but I wouldn't think the information is now incorrect, but has just been augmented to do so much more.  I believe the second edition volumes were written in the DataPower firmware 7.x timeframe.  I'd love to see a Third edition, but I don't see it happening.  I remember discussing this with the authors when the second editions were written and it was just an incredible amount of work.  I don't see anyone with those cycles that would be able to tackle that today.

    Regards,

    Steve

And to expand on Steve's post, and as one of the authors and editors of the 2nd edition Handbook, it was quite an undertaking, especially doing it all on our own time. I would venture to say that these books are 98% accurate with the major differences being what was added to support the various versions of APIc. There also have been some deprecations which aren't noted in the Handbooks as well so that needs to be considered.
From an educational perspective, there are many videos online which some are good, some are hard to follow with the audio being less than crisp. Just search for "DataPower"; I just did that on YouTube and found over 250 videos that are related to learning DataPower... Some with very specific topics such as configuring Match actions.
