    MAM 7.6.1.2:

I noticed that it's possible to change a task's status to INPRG while the WO is still WAPPR.

That seems unintuitive to me. I would have thought that a WO would need to be INPRG in order for work to commence on tasks.

What would be the reason/use case behind that design decision?

    Thanks.

The task may be a preparation activity that evaluates what is needed for the work order, the likely materials and safety measures needed, etc. The work order approval is a financial approval of the plans, this is why the planned estimates are saved at approval.

In the same way you may have tasks that are at WAPPR after the work order has reached COMP. In fact, you may create the task in the Actuals tab at COMP status. A good example is to update documentation.

Maximo is used in many industries/sectors and what may seem strange in one, may be quite normal in another, or what would be strange for one work type may be normal for another. Maximo, therefore, needs to be flexible and may not have those hard validations that sometimes you might expect. And, it cannot have all the business rules for validations for all industries/sectors - think how complex it would then become !

As always, Andrew hit the nail on the head that flexibility is key. Some organizations have very defined approval structures and scheduling activities and some have technicians who create and self assign work to themselves.

There was one piece I wanted to add though. While this skips the "APPR" status, it doesn't bypass the validation that the user can approve the work. IE if you remove the option for "Approve Work Order", someone would not be able to put a WO to INPRG that wasn't already in an APPR status. So if you wanted to avoid that and your users don't need to be able to approve work, just make sure to remove that permission.

If you want to prevent tasks from changing to INPRG status if the work order is WAPPR, you can use Administration > Conditional Express Manager to prevent the status change.
