    Good Morning, 
         I hope you all are doing well. I am new to the group and I am hoping someone can help me with a project I am working on. I am trying to revive a IBM iSeries eServer 9406-810. This machine was taken out of service about a year ago in working condition. I have gotten it out of the closet, blew off the dust, just to find out it will not IPL. It has an error code of B1634605. From my research it seems like it may be a failed HDD. I can not get any visual display via twinax. What would be the best way to more forward, would love to see this thing work again? Thank you all for your insights. I am new to this machine, so forgive me if I did not use the correct terminology.

    SRC B1XX4XXX is more likely to do with failure of HW on the mainboard which can be tough for you to handle unless you have access to mainboard parts of this model 810.

    May I ask what purpose is it that you want to revive this 810 machine?  If it is just to be able to get a basic practice with CL commands in 5250 session, then there is a more convenient way for you as there is a number of web sites providing free basic IBM i access with 5250 session that you can use, for example, at PUB400.COM.

    Hi Scott
    you've disassembled the server to clean it? Maybe some dust inside some connector....
    In any case B1634605 is a service processor reference code and as indicated on that link https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power5?topic=POWER5/ipha6_p5/x50ssp.html 4605 error code drive to a load source problem, so an hard disk problem. A mechanical disk could have several issues expecially if he server was moved or it was stopped for a long time.
    You can install a new disk or use another disk if you have one, but in this case tou have to perform a scratch install starting from slic original media and / or a full system backup.

    I remember hearing something about 'sticktion'.  Basically if you carefully removed the harddrive(s) one at a time, and lightly tapped on it a few times and replaced it sometimes that helped.

    Yes Robert, sure!!! When I was CE at IBM a gentle shacking was an help in case of disk read/write eadh stuck. :-)

    Dear Robert

    I never did the tapping at all.  Having learnt from my mentor during my early days with AS/400, I used a small piece of pencil rubber to carefully rub, and therefore "clean", the row of small gold-color contact points of the device. The contact then looked brighter and HW problem solved practically all the times with any components with lots of such gold contact points, even with my old desktop PCs when I occasionally got memory error message at power on. I suspect high moisture in my part of the world has to do with the contact problem. I also suspect the act of pulling out and putting back the device into the connection slot should also clean the contact somewhat.
