  • 1.  Is there a way to limit meter reading ranges?

If I have an odometer and I want to limit the values that can be entered, is there a way to limit so no higher than a value of 300 can be entered for a reading?

    Hi Christopher,

Let's understand this a bit more.  If you're asking to restrict that an entry cannot exceed 300, then how in the first place is it possible to exceed 300?

I'm assuming that it's the upper range, so that would lead me to use a gauge meter and combine it with a condition monitoring point.  But that does not stop me from putting in 301.  So, what does?

Characteristic gauge linked to a numeric range of say 0 to 300 with no interval defined.  Nope as you can only link ALN domains.

Let's get back to the fact that's it's an odometer. So, are you saying that the rollover is at 300, so in fact, you can't exceed 300?  Or is the 300 the max delta?  If a delta, why cannot it not exceed 300.  Weird things do happen?

Can we get a little more operational context, please/

What is happening is that a technician is doing a vehicle inspection and entering the current odometer reading. Instead of putting in 41,069 for example, it gets fat fingered as 410,069. Now the next person tries to do the inspection on the next shift in the middle of the night and and it errors out when they put the correct meter reading in because it is lower than the previous reading. So they add to the bad reading just to get through the inspection. Until It gets reported and the readings are corrected and fixed this keeps going on.

We know the routes of these particular shuttle vehicles and they should never go more than 100 miles in a day for example. I was trying to limit the differential so no more than 300 could be put in above the the previous value. I guess that is a better way to state it. If that makes sense?

    Hi Christopher,

Not in core Maximo meters. However, there is a Daily Limit for an asset meter in Transportation that will provide a warning on the reading - the help says - Maximum expected daily average for the usage. Any reading that is entered whose average daily usage exceeds the Daily Limit setting would generate a warning message.

The best I could come up with.

Thanks for the info. What is Transportation? Is that a Maximo add on suite?

    Hi Christopher

Transport is an industry solution that can be enabled in MAS.

The field that Andrew mentioned is the Daily Limit.

An important thing with the Transportation meters is that you need to define the start date as no readings can be accepted before that date.  Also, you can link it to an item.  This is great, where you can indicate what fuel can be used.  Additionally, by extension, if you issue that fuel to the asset, it can then also update the meter.  Andrew's article should have more on metered material usage.

You will receive this message when you exceed the daily limit.  Please note that this is the averaged daily limit, not a hard limit.

I would hesitate to say that you would get something (as I haven't tried) similar on data entry with Maximo Mobile.

    Hi Christopher,

Maximo Transportation is an Industry Solution. It provides a layer of functionality over core Maximo and is used with trucks, and other fleet assets. It can also be used with other transportation assets, but Asset Configuration Manager (ACM) (an addon) would be the starting point for trains and Aviation Industry Solution for aeroplanes. Transportation and ACM can be used together, but there is overlapping functionality and care should be taken as to when to deploy ACM and when to use Transportation functions.

If you are on MAS you are now entitled to use the Industry Solutions and add-ons.
