  • 1.  Is Power 11 availability affecting the roll out of IBM i 7.6?

    Posted Wed July 09, 2025 02:46 PM

How much of a factor, if any, is the availability of Power 11 playing with Vendor software support for IBM i 7.6?

Meaning, how many vendors were hoping to bypass spending the money on Power 10, and go straight to Power 11?  If IBM keeps the pattern up, iNext will be out in 2028 and will likely not run on Power 10 so, if you have to upgrade, why not try to go with a 6 year life and not a 3 year life?  And get a P11 instead of a P10?  I know it's a factor in our roll out.  We have a Power 9 which we need to replace.

    Dear Robert,

there were rumors IBM i 7.6 would not support Power10 - that's wrong!

IBM i 7.6 is supported with Power10 servers (with a minimum firmware level FW1060), but not with Power9.

If your SW vendor supports your current platform, why do you need to replace your server?

    Current Power11 servers support  IBM i  starting with  7.4 TR12, 7.5 TR6, 7.6, with PTFs

I've heard no such rumor that IBM i 7.6 would not run on a Power 10.  That was not part of the discussion anyway.

The discussion was that if a vendor is currently running a Power 9 and wants to test IBM i 7.6 he may not want to purchase a Power 10 as that would be obsolete in just 3 years for testing IBM i rNext.  That vendor would be better off with a Power 11.  At the time of the original post the Power 11 was not available.  As of this time there is still not a P05 tier of the Power 11 available.  A necessary thing for small vendors.

    Hi Robert,

I realise i'm late to this thread however, i've seen lots of interests in IBMi 7.6 especially with the MFA built into the operating system. The biggest impact that I've seen is around 3rd Party applications/vendor support, where there saying they are "compatible" with 7.6 and not fully supported.

The benefit of the IBMi platform is that the applications will just in general run and run however, with 7.6 having MFA i'm seeing the MFA not being available in these applications.

You know, if your vendor supplied application is limited to RPG/36 and hasn't been modified since the CISC-to-RISC conversion you may be right.  However if your vendor supplied application does anything more, including but not limited to:

    • Java calls
    • API calls

There is a whole host of things which may go wrong upon every update of the OS.  Including but not limited to:

    • Java versions no longer supported on the current version of the OS
    • New security requirements, like the background behind 7.6's QIBM_IOSYSCFG_VIEW
