Hi Geoff,
Have you checked out the wiki for the Inspections functionality? Vinicius Garmatz is the architect and he maintains very good information here. There is an explanation of the functionality, links to recordings of demos on YouTube, examples of configurations and even an entity relationship diagram that explains the tables in use for Inspections. Use the table of contents on the left to navigate.

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en_us#!/wiki/IBM%20Maximo%20Asset%20Management/page/Inspector%20Work%20Center Questions I have include
1. When you add a meter to a question, does maximo select the asset meter through the link between the Jobplan's PM and the work order? If yes how does it handle multi assets where a series or readings per asset are required?
When you add an inspection question on the form that requires a meter reading, you specify the name of the meter. The asset or location meter is determined when the inspection results entry is created. If you create an ad hoc inspection without a work order via the Conduct an Inspection work center then you must specify the asset or location at this time. You can also associate an inspection form with a Job Plan, Job Plan Task or in 7.6.1 a route stop. The asset or location meter will be determined by matching the meter name from the inspection form question with the asset from the work order header, task or multi asset table depending on your setup with PM, Job Plans and Routes. The asset or location must have the same meter name associated that you have associated with the inspection form question to find a match. I think once you go through the set up this will make more sense - a demo is worth a 1000 words :). If a series of readings are required, you simple specify this during the setup on the inspection form.
2. How do you group questions?
There is a checkbox to the right of the questions, check the questions that should be grouped and then click Create Groups. You can drag and drop to change the order of questions and groups. In 7.6.1 we now support routes as well. If an inspection involves more than one asset you can set this up with a route and when you execute the inspection in a batch for all the assets on a route then you will be presented with a clean inspection form that is grouped one level higher for route stops.
3. When you launch the inspection from the workorder, where do the answers get stored and are they linked to assets for reporting
See the ERD via the link below. It shows the names of the tables. Yes they are linked to assets for reporting. Also, in the Assets application when you click on the View Work Details button on the Work tab you will see a new Inspections sub tab now that links to Inspection results. There is also an object structure to report on Inspection results and it would be easy via configuration to add more fields to the screen to show the results in the traditional Maximo UI.

How would a user know that a workorder has a inspection form to complete? I had to look closely to find the Inspections form data field.
In the traditional Maximo UI there is an Inspection Form (the template) and Inspection Result (where the results are stored) field in the Job Details section of the work order and also for each task on the work order (if tasks require inspections). In 7.6.1 (now released) there is an action to enter inspection results and also you will see these fields in the multi asset, location, CI table as we support routes with Inspections. The Inspection Result field will have a number in it that references the Inspection Result if there is a form to fill out. You could move this field, color code it, add a message, etc.
5. Can you prevent a workorder from being completed if any of the mandatory questions are not answered?
You can make inspection questions mandatory and an inspection cannot be completed until you answer all mandatory questions. Through configuration you could make it so a work order status cannot be changed to complete until the associated inspection(s) status is complete. In the future road map we would like to make it so that inspection questions can be conditional, this could mean conditionally required even.

Subject: Inspections
Hi,
I am experimenting with the new inspections application.
has anyone been able to document the end to end process using maximo?
I've found some links between the maximo entities but would appreciate any assistance.
So far I have found I can create an inspection form and approve it and then link to a job plan so that it shows up in work order tracking.
Questions I have include
1. When you add a meter to a question, does maximo select the asset meter through the link between the Jobplan's PM and the work order? If yes how does it handle multi assets where a series or readings per asset are required?
2. How do you group questions?
3. When you launch the inspection from the workorder, where do the answers get stored and are they linked to assets for reporting
4. How would a user know that a workorder has a inspection form to complete? I had to look closely to find the Inspections form data field.
if anyone else is working through this topic - please feel free to add comments
Thanks in advance
Geoff
