Implications of Switching from Database Storage to File System in Sterling Integrator

  • 1.  Implications of Switching from Database Storage to File System in Sterling Integrator

    Posted Fri March 28, 2025 06:59 PM

    Hello, IBM Sterling Integrator Community,

I am considering migrating document storage in IBM Sterling Integrator from Database Storage to File System Storage by modifying the doc_storage.properties file.

Before proceeding, I would like to understand the possible implications and impacts of this change, particularly regarding:

    1. Business Processes (BPs) – Will BPs that interact with document storage need modifications? Are there specific services that depend on database storage?

    2. Performance & Scalability – Are there any notable improvements or drawbacks when switching to file system storage?

    3. Backup & Disaster Recovery – How does this change affect data backup strategies and disaster recovery planning?

    4. Other Considerations – Are there any additional aspects I should be aware of before making this change?

If anyone has experience with this migration or best practices to follow, I would appreciate your insights.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Rodrigo,

Regarding implication, Sterling allows you to override document storage at BP level. So as long as all BP are configured with default storage you don't need to update any BP else you would need to update respected BP to change document storage to system default.

for performance, it depends on file size, if Sterling integrator is dealing with large file, then it would be better to go for file system storage for smaller file DB storge works best.

regarding DR strategy, yes you would need to plan replicate documents to DR server.

Its recommended to test it well before applying change in produciton.

    Hi Rodrigo,

    1. No changes need to BP as long as they are configured with Default Document store.
    2.  if depends on size of files, if SI is handling large file (>10 MB) , you can expect positive impact on performance but if majority of files are smaller <1 MB you may noticed negative impact on performance. so it would be better to test it well in lower environment.
    3.  yes, would need to replicate files stored in file system for DR

    Regards. Badal
