Hi Sue!
That's certainly a conundrum, isn't it? Trying to keep up with the fixes yet maintaining a stable environment!
It was revealed when IBM moved all development to India that the QA/QC team had been dramatically reduced. So the onerous is on us, the end users to test the begeezies out of a new Interim Fix or FixPack to find all the new stuff that's been broken.
We are fortunate at my company that our Cognos servers are all behind a firewall and not internet facing. Our users can only get to them on the internal network (or VPN). Thus I can pretty much turn a blind eye to the monthly slew of vulnerabilities addressed, especially since IBM even states that Interim Fixes are now minimally tested and users should only install them if you need them.
What we have done since getting burned by previous fix packs is once we go live, we stay on that minor release. We stayed on 11.1.7.6 until earlier this year (yes it was end of lifed in 2024), while we had been testing 11.2.4. We did our last round of testing on 11.2.4.5 at the end of the year and that's what we deployed on and will remain on till we start testing 12.0 (it won't be 12.1, since that was just released).
One thing you should investigate, when they released 11.2.4 FixPack 3, they made changes to some of the metadata tables to allow a continuous cycle of automatic deletion of expired report versions & history - it was less load and caused fewer blocks than the way they had done it previously. HOWEVER, this made upgrades to 12.0 fail. I didn't follow it closely because it wasn't an immediate concern for us, but I believe it was 12.0.4 that was released with the same metadata changes. Thus if you were on 11.2.4.3 or later you cannot upgrade to any 12.0 version prior to 12.0 FixPack 4.
Best regards,
Wayne

Hi Sue,
For answer #1, you need to make sure to read everything about Removed and deprecated features in 12.1.x - IBM Documentation and also Removed and deprecated features in 12.0.x - IBM Documentation. For instance, Query Studio is not supported with v12.x releases so it could be an issue for some customers.
For answer #2, you need to update with fixpack (FP) or interim pack (IP) according to new security bulletins from IBM (Security Bulletins - Security Bulletins - IBM Support).
For answer #3, I don't know what IBM is expecting but you are probably expected by your security team to update Cognos if there is a security bulletin.

I am also asking the group for any info and advice before in house upgrade.
We also need to upgrade to Cognos v12.x.x from v11.2.4. We were waiting for an LTS version and finally looked to see why it was taking so long. Now, I am still figuring out what is replacing that level. We are too small to install and test every small fix pack released. In the past, we only installed the LTS versions for each major release level. Not so much for whether there is support, just not to have to install evey fix pack.
1) Are there any issues going directly from Cognos v11.2.4 LTS to any particular version of Cognos 12.0.x? We are assuming OK to keep waiting on v12.1.x since it just arrived.
2) Is there a suggested version for Cognos v12.0.x that is more "stable", if we need to install fix packs?
3) I can't tell but it sounds like IBM is planning/expecting that users will need to install every fix pack for every new release level. Can anyone confirm?
Thank you in advance!

What's more interesting is 11.2.4 was supposed to be the last LTS. However with FixPack 5 they included new code for generating PDFs that was included in 12.0.4, which unfortunately requires a few new MIME types added in IIS. Since I always do a full uninstall/reinstall including running the IIS config script, we were unaffected. But there were tickets open that without the new MIME types added to IIS, some PDFs were rendered blank.
I was surprised IBM would include a major change like that in a FixPack that the majority of which was just supposed to be security vulnerability fixes.
Ever since we moved from Cognos 10.2.2 to IBM Analytics 11.x, we've only applied FixPacks when when we were planning to go to a new version (like we are now with 11.2.4) and always do THOROUGH testing. It's amazing what gets broken by a seemingly straight-forward fixpack and we'd gotten burned a few times.
So the fact that they're not even going to attempt to release a more "stable" version does not bode well and is probably going to make people upgrade only when they absolutely have to - ie: the version no longer suppored.

Thank you very much Patrick and Robert for your answers.
That's a very interesting point Robert and I find that this LTS label did help to product management in house.
Now IBM could ask to update to any major release at any time if a bug is detected. So it is not a good news for us.
Thank you again for your answer.
Best regards.

Hi,
my knowledge re this topic is that IBM discontinued to mark versions as "LTS" releases. The term will vanish from the IBM website. The reason is that each minor or major release is/should be stable enough for production. Speaking of CA 12.0 version 12.0.4 is the last one for this release and 12.1.x will follow.

Hi German,
To my knowledge, there is no LTS date announced for Cognos Analytics v12.0 release.
