  • 1.  IBMi Ansible modernisation

    Posted Fri October 17, 2025 10:04 AM

    Hi All,

I've been watching the number of downloads for the ibmi collection, while it is not the same number as AIX I have noticed it increasing rapidly. Therefore, as part of your modernisation strategy, what I'm curious about it where do you consider yourself on this journey:

1 - kicking the tires with ansible?

2 - using ansible to reuse existing processes (like job schedules)

3 - re writing your new and/or existing processes to be under the ansible control

4  - a combination of new and old

5 - integrating ansible with IBMi as part your non IBMi ansible collaboration

6 - not even considered it

7 - other (it would be appreciated if you could expand)

I find that using Red Hat AAP (Ansible Automation Platform) enables the modernisation strategy to take you to the next level and collaborate across the business.

Many thanks in advance for your feedback and sharing ideas

    Hello James,

I would say 2,3, and 4. I have been using ansible for almost 2 years to automate our IPL process, PTF installs, user creation (limited), and open source package management. However, I use red hat satellite to manage the packages but ansible to automate it. Looking into expanding a bit more into the security areas and compliance but we have fortra tools for it. I also use ansible for my IBM flash system, HMC and vios.

I wonder if the industry is using ansible or not. Most experienced people are better at CL or other languages but I figure using a popular IaC tool could help modernizing the system.

    Hope this info helped.
