  • 1.  IBM Maximo - where to start

    Hi All,

I am new here and looking to get certified with Maximo Asset management starting from Installation of Maximo and management. I am an IT support staff so the role will be to support IBM Maximo users. I am not sure where to start and how to gain this knowledge and certification. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    many Thanks,
    Prajith

    Hi Prajith,

    Welcome to the journey.

I would point you to the MAS training being put out by IBM.  See Martin William's post.

Then you have all the information being put out by Andrew Jeffery @ https://www.youtube.com/@MaximoSecrets/featured

Then you have the IBM Community @ https://community.ibm.com/community/user/asset-facilities/homehttps://community.ibm.com/community/user/asset-facilities/home

You also have the MORE community @ https://moremaximo.com/home

I would also look at the available certification @ https://www.ibm.com/training/search?query=maximo%27 and for each pull them apart and work on the areas you aren't familiar with and also to take the sample test.

I would finally advise getting onto an implementation team and to talk with other consultants.

Most of the journey outlined is surprisingly aimed though at a functional consultant rather than an integration or developer consultant.  There are elements within the above journey, but no dedicated training.

    Good luck.

Its coming Craig, we're working our way through the content and are nearly finished with the functional materials, we're just starting the implementation courses with Workflow.  Later this year we'll have scripting, application designer, database configuration, Data Loading - all of these are going through a complete re-write not just conversion from 7.6 so you'll see lots of new material, features and explanation, all with hands-on labs on MAS Manage.

I'll post here and on my LinkedIn when each new course is available.

Since you're new to the product, it's important to highlight that we're in the process of transitioning from our Maximo Asset Management product (7.6.1.X) to Maximo Application Suite. You initially mentioned installation and these two products are very different from an installation perspective. You should discuss with your organization to determine the appropriate product to focus on from an installation perspective. Our end of support for 7.6.1.X is September 2025 (though customers can pay for extended support) so as long as you have the resources available that know how to install 7.6.1.X, I would personally focus on learning the new architecture (built on OpenShift and containers) rather than spending a lot of time learning the old architecture that will be obsolete in a few years.

Almost all the administration related capabilities inside of Manage are identical between 7.6.1.X and Manage so I think this would be the best area to focus on, especially in a support role. Understanding how security works (including some complicated topics like independent security groups, labor restrictions, site restrictions, etc.), some of the common configuration (Application Designer, Database Configuration, Domains, System Properties, Organization Settings, etc.), and understanding (but not necessarily writing) integrations, automation scripts, and reports. Learning what you can about your existing configurations would be extremely beneficial, but it's very hit or miss whether they're documented and how well they're documented.
