  • 1.  IBM ITX for EDI File conversion

    ​Hi Team,

    We got a request to Mask data in the EDI (834,835 & 837) files and the Data Masking Tool that we use doesn't support EDI files directly.

    We need to Covert EDI files into CSV/Flat files and input those files as source to Data Masking Tool and Mask the data.

    Post masking, we need to use the output CSV files and convert them back to EDI files.

    To perform above said conversions, we are trying to use IBM ITX Designer with Health care packs. Wondering if anyone use ITX for similar purpose and what was the experience.

    Any lessons learned and suggestions please.

    Hi Harsha,

    Does it need to be done by a separate Data Masking Tool.  Can the rules be set up in a Sterling Map instead?  I would think that would be the easiest approach - have an EDI --> EDI map with Extended Rules that undertake the data masking.

    As long as it masks all the sensitive fields ( Name, Address, SSN, Phone, Health care records ) I am good to use short paths.

    Yes, ITX with the Pack for Healthcare EDI is a great way to mask PII and PHI and transform HIPAA EDI data.  You could do this as either one or two transformation steps. 

    If your goal is to start with an EDI file and end up with an EDI file where the only change is the masking of some data then a pass-thru type map will be easiest.  Earlier in this thread Paul Brett posted a simple example of one such map.  Variants of such a map can include rules that are as complex as you need them to be.

    If your goal is to retain intermediary CSV files than it is also possible to map from the EDI to the CSV then to the new EDI.  Your approach will be shaped by your requirements.  But yes, ITX is the right tool for such data masking and transformation, and the HIPAA pack provides artifacts to get you started.
