IBM i IFS as client of another IFS or NFS or GPFS server

  • 1.  IBM i IFS as client of another IFS or NFS or GPFS server

    Posted Wed November 16, 2022 04:21 PM
    Good day:

Can a remote IFS be connected to a mounting point in an IFS on IBM i?
Can a remote NFS be mounted to a mounting point in an IFS on IBM i?
Can a remote GPFS be mounted to an IFS mounting point ion IBM i?

In other words, IFS can be both client and server of a shared protocol such as IFS, NFS or GPFS?

    Thank you so much.

    Dear Daniel

    >>>>  Can a remote IFS be connected to a mounting point in an IFS on IBM i?  <<<

Yes.  You do this with the use of QFileSvr.400 file system which is quite simple to use.  I used it a lot in the past supporting SAP on i.  In the "client" IBM i system, you create a subdirectory using the host name or IP address of the "target" IBM i system.  Read this Technote for a starting information on how to use it : Using QFileSvr.400 file system    Do a Google search with "ibm i qfilesvr.400" and you will find more information on this.

I never use NFS in IBM i but know for sure IBM i does support it and a Google search produces results such as these :
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/nfs-concepts-and-troubleshooting
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/using-nfs-mount-remote-file-systems
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/ibm-i-save-and-restore-using-virtual-optical-images-nfs-server

As for GPFS, as far as I know (I had a colleague who was an GPFS expert), IBM i does not support it, at least not yet.

As a side note, IBM i can also be a client to a Windows Server's file system as well. We use QNTC file system for this.
