  • 1.  IBM DS8900 - Pool Capacity Considerations

    Hi all,

    At this moment, I am doing some research on IBM documents (Redbooks) about IBM DS8900 and Pool Pair (Extent Pools) capacity.

    It is known that for IBM FlashSystems, a recommendation is not to use above 80-85% of the Pool (for example, the Garbage Collection process).

    But, is it the same for IBM DS8900? The IBM Virtualize recommendation, I understand it is because the FCM, but, the IBM DS8900 does not use FCM (yet).

    They use HPFE, so disks modules are not the same.

    My inquiries are: does the same approach apply to IBM DS89K? And, does anybody knows if there is a documentation about this? Until now, I haven't been able to find one.

    I just returned from IBM Tucson, where I met with the DS8 developers. I asked them the same question, and the answer was no there is no such limit. That said, you should not plan to run the system at 100% capacity and monitor it closely if you are using thinly provisioned volumes. Also, if you are using GM replication, it's recommended to keep the target DS8 below 97% utilization to allow sufficient space for journaling.
