IBM Data Studio 4.2.0 released

  • 1.  IBM Data Studio 4.2.0 released

    Posted Thu January 29, 2026 09:41 PM

    FYI,

IBM have just released Data Studio 4.2.0 to address multiple vulnerabilities in the old versions.

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7258315?myns=swgother&mynp=OCSS62YD&mync=E&cm_sp=swgother-_-OCSS62YD-_-E

It is a separate install, not an upgrade. I don't think there are any functional improvements, just the security update.

To save you hunting for it, here's the link to Fix Central:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/swg/selectFixes?parent=ibm~Information+Management&product=ibm/Information+Management/IBM+Data+Studio&platform=All&function=all

I would try to unpack DS 4.20 over a copy of an existing installation directory (for example DS 4.1.4) overriding existing files and then perform installation.

    Hello all,

It needs to be a separate installation, there is no migration for Data Studio.   Uninstall the old version to install the new one.

You can find some additional information at:

    Posted Fri January 30, 2026 12:18 PM

    Hello team,

I updated the Data Studio installation Technote after checking with the development team:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/7257426

    Please note:

1.) Installation Manager is not included with Data Studio package anymore, and it needs to be downloaded separately.

2.) Data Studio V4.2 installation only supports Installation Manager 1.9.3.3 and 1.9.3.4.   If you try any other release, you will get an error.

3.) There is no migration from V4.1.x to V4.2.   You will need to uninstall the old release to install V4.2.

4.) The steps to install V4.2 are the same as V4.1.4

5.) The only part that is missing is the Compatibility Report, and it will be updated later by the team as I don't have access to it.

    I hope that helps!

    Hi Cintia,

I've already told support that point 2) is really strange because IBM recommended several versions of Installation Manager before to migrate to at least 1.10.1 because of security risks. And that was the reason why we migrated all of our machines to 1.10.1 or later. So we cannot downgrade.

    Hi Cintia,

After installing V4.2 I got an SQL0N error when trying to connect to a data source using TLS.
The stack trace reports: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unsupported protocolSSL_TLSv2

Replacing the shipped db2jcc4.jar with the V12.1.3 version, driver version 4.36.6 fixed the issue.

Which of the db2jcc4.jar would you replace with which one?

    Hi Jan,

it seems you kept your old SDPShared and still have the old driver folder. So, it depends which one you are using on your data source.
If you look at the driver properties for your data source, then klick on the little triangle on the right (Edit Driver Properties), in that window that opens look in the JAR List tab, you should see which folder the driver is in there.

I actually uninstalled 4.1.4.4 and made sure the old installation folders were gone, both DataStudio and SDPShared, before installing 4.2. I wanted to be sure I got rid of all the old stuff and start with a clean SDPShared. And in that case it should be the ......db2_2.3.0.202601090956\driver\db2jcc4.jar

    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/db2-jdbc-driver-versions-and-downloads?view=full

I took the one for Db2 12.1.3, driver version 4.36.6

    Hi Sven!
I uninstalled IBM DS completely - run scan for db2jcc4.jar, then I installed DS 4.2 and rerun scan again.

    Conclusions:

    1. Two backlevel db2jcc4.jar are installed into SDPShared by IBM IM installing DS 4.2;
    2. IBM Db2 installs two different versions of db2jcc4.jar - one in SQLLIB\Java, second one in SQLLIB\db2tss\lib:

    C:\DB2V12R1M5F0\SQLLIB\java>.\jre\bin\java -cp ./db2jcc4.jar com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Jcc -version
IBM Data Server Driver for JDBC and SQLJ 4.37.3

    C:\DB2V12R1M5F0\SQLLIB\java>.\jre\bin\java -cp ../db2tss/lib/db2jcc4.jar com.ibm.db2.jcc.DB2Jcc -version
IBM Data Server Driver for JDBC and SQLJ 4.28.11

    Hi Jan,

yes you are correct, there are 2 installed.

From my experience the driver used by the defined data sources/connections is the one in com.ibm.datatools.db2_2.3.0.202601090956\driver, but to be sure you will need to look at the properties of your data source.

Got to say I love the term JAR hell.
now moving to the DB2 Extension you will learn a bunch new terms.   Like what were they thinking, this thing is a no work of art, as well as, all things are hard to do and don't work.   And when they get it all working and you are use to it.  Bam and new crappy product to replace it.   Good luck trying to get visual explains to work.

    Hello Gerald,

According to our extended team, they have tried using Installation Manager V1.10, but it is not currently working and they are still investigating the issue at this time.

If you want to use Data Studio V4.2, you will need to use 1.9.3.3 and 1.9.3.4 for now.

Otherwise you will need to wait for the conclusion of Installation Manager V1.10 investigation.

I hope that clarifies your question.

    Hi Cintia,

    I used to have Installation Manager v1.9.1.6 (1.9.1006.20210614_1906) , had to move up to v1.10.1.3 ( 1.10.1003.20250827_1041)
along with Data Studio v4.1.4 APAR4 to address security concerns (flagged by WIZ scanner).
It was made clear that DS 4.2.0 needs IM v1.9.3.3 or 1.9.3.4, so, IM v1.10.1.3 gotten rid of, but I can't install neither v1.9.3.3 nor 1.9.3.4,
Installation is reported to be "Successful with warnings", error stack in both logs is almost identical
My fellow AI compared 2 XML logs from both attempts:

Both XML logs hit the same primary error stack: an Eclipse SWT UI failure org.eclipse.swt.SWTException: Graphic is disposed, originating at org.eclipse.swt.graphics.Image.getBoundsInPixels(Image.java:1422) and cascading through SWT layout/Workbench rendering code paths.

    Stack head (same)

In both files, the top of the exception is org.eclipse.swt.SWTException: Graphic is disposed with org.eclipse.swt.SWT.error(SWT.java:4533/4448/4419) followed by Image.getBoundsInPixels(Image.java:1422), then SWT Label.computeSizeInPixels, Control.computeSize, GridData.computeSize, and GridLayout.layout/computeSize.

    Mid-stack path (same)

Both stacks proceed through Composite.updateLayout/layout, then into e4 workbench renderer code (org.eclipse.e4.ui.workbench.renderers.swt.SashRenderer.* and org.eclipse.e4.ui.internal.workbench.swt.PartRenderingEngine.*) and then up through WorkbenchWindow.* close paths and Workbench.closeWorkbench(...).

    Additional errors (different)

Only IM_20260202_1705.xml also logs a java.lang.NullPointerException in org.eclipse.ui.internal.WorkbenchPage$E4PartListener.partDeactivated(WorkbenchPage.java:227) and the follow-on "An exception occurred while notifying part listeners" message.

Log dated "20260202" is for IM 1.9.3.3 (Java 1.8.0_461), another log (from Jan.29th) is for the failed attempt to install IM 1.9.3.4 (Java 1.8.0_471)

Have you, by chance, heard of similar issues?
    Thanks.

    Hello Nikolai,

Yes, I have seen this error before.

During the installation, please disable the product search in Installation Manager.  Data Studio zip file already contains all necessary files, and you don't need Installation Manager to be looking for new updates.

There are 2 places that you need to disable that:

1.) In the Information Manager Preferences page

    2.)

After you disabled the search on both places, please try the installation again.

    I hope that helps!

We are investigating this issue with a high priority as the research has been escalated internally already.

For IM 1.9.2.5 IBM recommends it's customers to migrate to IBM 1.10.1.1 or later because of bugs and/or security vulnerabilities(https://jazz.net/downloads/ibm-installation-manager/releases/1.9.2.5). And now after customers migrated to IM 1.10.x they should downgrade to an older version because their own product DataStudio 4.2(which was released only because of security problems) does not support the newest version of IM?? How crazy is that????

And the most craziest thing is that the old version DataStudio 4.1.4 installs without any problem using IM 10.1.3.1....;-))

If the plugin was already deprecated in V4.1.4, we won't support it in V4.2.

Data Studio V4.2 was released mostly to fix some vulnerability issues and newer OS.

As Data Studio is in maintenance mode, unfortunately there are no plans for enhancements on the code.

My understanding is that DS does not support DB2  on Z/os V13,  is this still true. We are currently at DS 4.1.4. It seems to work at DB2 V13 FL100, can it be used at hight function levels in DB2 V13.

If it does I would be delighted and would install the new version of DS.

    Hello Carol,

Data Studio does not support z/OS databases since March 31 2025 as the announcement here:

    https://community.ibm.com/community/user/blogs/jane-chan2/2024/02/27/ibm-data-studio-support-for-db2-for-zos-ends-on-ma

Just to clarify, a non-supported environment means, if it works: great, but if it doesn't, we are not able to help you.

So my recommendation is to start using the new z/OS replacement products as soon as possible, before Data Studio stopped working with new z/OS releases.

I need some help from all of you.

As you might know, Data Studio support team only knows that you are using a product when there is an issue with it, and you create a case with us.

We don't actually know how you use the product on your daily routine.

Can you please provide a list of Data Studio features that you like/use the most and why?

That would help provide a feedback to the product manager and development team to improve our products.

    Appreciate the feedback!

These days (outside of Mainframe) we primarily use the DB2 Developer Extension for VS Code for most other DBA and Developer's needs.

Data Studio 4.2 appears to be much less stable than 4.1.4. Data Studio 4.2 abends every so often with "Unhandled event loop exception".

    Hi Cintia

I use DS for performance analysis and native stored procedure development primarily because there is either no mainframe/TSO equivalent in our shop or the reports are more easily digestible for our consumers

    Cheers

    Hi Cintia,
we are using DS 4.1.4 for the pairing process with IDAA V7.5.14 and also for debugging stored procs with Db2 Unified Debugger.
AdminFoundation V1.2 even with the newest maintenance level still does not provide this pairing function.

    Hello Thomas,

According to the z/OS team, the IDAA pairing function has been available in Admin Foundation.  You can see this indicated in the screenshot:

Have you tried a newer release of the product?

I am adding here, in case other people has this same question.

    Hi Cintia,
thanks for your feedback. We have installed  ADF  V1.2.1.5,  UMS  V1.2.0.14 on Zowe v. 3.2.0+20250430, so this is the newest official maintenance level of ADF and UMS.
Unfortunately, the ADD button does not exists in any UI function in our setup. Not sure if this is a licensing issue.
As pairing the IDAA V7.5 with Db2 13 within DS V4.1.4 is still working, we currently do not have the pressure the issue needs to be analyzed & fixed neartime.
We will check opening a case or contact the ADF support via Slack channel.
    Best regards,
    Thomas

My take on this is that DataStudio still is the best tool in this category that has come from IBM, it has outlived DSM and DMC, and I wouldn't be surprised if it outlives the intelligence center also.

Now, IBM recognizes that developers want to use an IDE, VS Code, and hence have developed the developer extension, that one is however mostly aimed at developers, not really useful for DBAs.

The power of an IDE is that it is customizable, you can add stuff to it that you need in your day to day work, none of the browser-based solutions like DMC or Admin Foundation have that possibility.

I probably do 80-90% of my work from within the eclipse environment which runs DataStudio, I have MQ Explorer installed into the same eclipse, to manage queues for Q-replication if needed.

I have direct access to the servers file systems through the Remote System Explorer which is part of eclipse by default, together with the bash editor I installed into eclipse I can do my shell scripting directly on the server.

Now, you could use a myriad of different tools, but I think, having most everything I need in one place is a huge benefit and simplifies what I need to do, by a lot.

I totally agree , the SQL tuning (liberty ) falls short when comparing it to Data Studio, But DB2 for MVS , datastudio is not going to support DB2 v13. I feel like my hands have been bound and tied using Zowe.

The IBM Data Studio Web Console provides health monitoring, job management and connection management for DB2 databases. It can be used to share monitored features and analysis across database servers. The web console generates reports and keep track of databases. These report are handy for investigating performance problems and setting benchmarks for database.

    Hello Madhusudan,

If you are using Data Studio with LUW databases, have you tried Data Management Console (DMC) or Db2 Intelligence Center (Db2IC)?

We do have the same features that you mentioned, and in addition, we have alerts, monitor Q Rep queues, query tuning, historical data, etc.

One of the advantages for monitoring is, as DMC and Db2IC support newer Db2 releases, we use newer metrics as well.   For example, in Db2 Intelligence Center, the query tuning feature has impact analysis and what if reports too.

It has a lot more metric details compared to the old Data Studio, which has not being improved for several years.   Data Studio tolerates newer Db2 releases, but it does not explore the new features or metrics.

In case you are interested to try, DMC is free of charge and you can download the V3.1.13.2 from IBM Fix Central

If you need help, I have the DMC User's Guide

For Db2 Intelligence Center, we have a 30 days trial

If you need help, I have a workshop material showing steps on how to install, and use the product, that I can share with customers.

    I hope that helps!

    Hello Cintia,

Without wanting to start a fundamental debate, I have witnessed the development over the years from Control Center, Data Studio and DSM to DMC.

I consider it strategically unfortunate that the new DB2IC is now bundled with paid AI functions as standard.

A modular model would make more sense: DB2IC as the base system for all customers for free, with AI as an optional add-on for those who actually need the added value.

    Best regards, Joachim

    Hello all,

Some great news: Db2 Genius Hub is now available for download.

Db2 Genius Hub is replacing the Db2 Intelligence Center with a new way to manage your databases using agentic intelligence for autonomous database operations, embedding AI-driven reasoning and built-in agents directly into Db2.

    Here are some additional information:

The trial is now 90 days instead of 30 days for the advanced features, and after the trial, you can still use the free version of the product.

And if you have any issues, please let us know, and we will be glad to assist you.

    Hi Cintia,

It is still showing 30 days trial here: https://early-access.ibm.com/software/support/trial/cst/welcomepage.wss?siteId=2220&tabId=&w=1 and also showing 30 days in the license agreement if you go to the download.

Is this just a re-brand of the Db2 Intelligence Center or is it actually something new?

    Hello Greg,

Db2 Intelligence Center is not available anymore, and the Db2 Genius Hub is the new product now.

We have changed the way we license Db2 Genius Hub.  You cannot buy Db2 Genius Hub product by itself, like the previous Db2 Intelligence Center.

Db2 Genius Hub is now part of the Db2 AI Edition packages.  (for more details, please check the product announcement above)

According to the product manager, the 90 days free trial is the following:

30 days: you can download the product and use it, no questions ask

60 days extension: if you liked the product and you want more time to test it, we can provide the extension license for 60 more days

We have a complete different way for the AI part where we are now integrating agentic AIs to monitor your databases for you.  It explores all the AI capabilities included in the new Db2 V12.1.4.

Here are some exciting new features in Db2 Genius Hub:

    • Besides using our Watson AI technology, you now have a choice to configure Db2 Genius Hub to use your own AI stack.   You can see more details here.
    • One new feature that a lot of people were asking in the past is now available in Db2 Genius Hub, you can now use the Log Analysis feature to monitor the db2diag.log file (Yay!!!!).

Please try our new product, and if you need any further assistance, the IBM team will be glad to help you.

    Hello Cintia,

    Really great news.

Can you tell me when the version for AIX will be released? It says "coming soon" for Windows, but not for AIX. Or is Linux the preferred platform for the future?

    Hello Joachim,

Currently we are not planning to have a release for AIX.

The reason for that is because there are a number of components we need for Agentic AI that are not available on AIX.

You can still monitor databases on AIX, but the Db2 Genius Hub needs to be installed on Linux or Windows (coming soon).

Hey Joachim, I think it is worth noting that Db2 Genius Hub running on RHEL will work with a Db2 database running on Db2 Power. If running Genius Hub itself on Power isn't a requirement, you can leverage the platform across your Db2 fleet on Power.

I have been using the Liberty plug in Zowe, I feel like the tool is back 10 years ago, when first being invented. The way it displays the visual diagram is horrible compared to the Visual in Data Studio. The information is not in one place when performing a tuning task. The diagram and the active information for each object is not presentable as output. it creates all these little files and really can not provide the analysis that is provided via data studio. I am extremely disappointed with the new improved Zowe, it falls short, and feel like we have to suffer for the poor presentation of the performance information.

Yes, got the heads up that it was being released publicly yesterday.  I've been evaluating it privately since 0.0.2.

Already a great improvement over the previous attempt.  And with Vijaya at the helm, I have high hopes that it will develop quickly into a great tool !!!

    Hello Cintia-san

Thank you for sharing this important information about the release of the Developer Extension for LUW.
With the release of the Developer Extension for LUW, I assumed the following future directions, but is my assumption correct? Please let me know if you can answer.

     - As with Db2 for z/OS, Db2 for LUW and Data Studio connections will no longer be supported.
     - Data Studio is no longer supported.

As a background to the above question, I know that the application development team I work with uses Data Studio to connect to Db2 13 for z/OS.
Because if Data Studio is going to end support, I need to tell them to stop using Data Studio from a security point of view and use the Developer Extension for z/OS.
    Best regards.

    Hello Michael,

According to the Db2 LUW documentation, it should be part of the LUW as well.

If that is missing, we need to contact development team, and I will need a case to track it.

Can you please create a case with us, for further investigation?
