How to tell if I am running

  • 1.  How to tell if I am running

    Posted Tue February 13, 2024 01:16 PM

I was reading this announcement https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/announcements/hardware-withdrawal-flashsystem-5200-flashsystem-7300-flashsystem-9500-select-features-replacement-available

Basically it says the following FlashCore Module 3 are being withdrawn and are being replaced with FlashCore Modules 4.

I am trying to determine if this affects me.

Based on the following, what am I on?

    Properties for drive 0
    ID:  0
    State:  Online
Written Capacity Limit:  2.65 TiB Used / 26.19 TiB Total (10.1%)
Raw Capacity:  1.12 TiB Used / 8.73 TiB Total (12.8%)
    Use: Member
    Write Endurance Limit: Below (0%)

    Type: Tier 0 Flash
    Firmware Level: 3_1_11
    FRU PN: 03LG623
    FRU identity: 11S03GH934YS17BG25L02K
    UID: 4e564d653033474839333459533137424732354c30324b001014101406b10000

Never finished the title...  and I cannot edit it.  You get the gist of it, eh?

    Hi Robert!

FCMs (and only FCMs) use the following Version format:

FCM Generation Major Version Minor Version

So Firmware Level: 3_1_11 Tells you this is an FCM 3 running 1.11

FCM4s are a drop in replacement for FCM3, so they can be used as a FRU part, an MES upgrade or extension of an existing FCM3 RAID array or as new storage in your FCM3 supporting systems (5200, 7300, 9500).

Please note:  The FCM4 in the same array as FCM3s will behave as an FCM3.

Generally, FCM3 users don't need to care or pay attention to this.

    Cheers,

Thank you.  This is exactly what I needed to know.  In great detail.

I do have one question though, is there a drawback to "The FCM4 in the same array as FCM3s will behave as an FCM3."?

What are the advantages to a FCM4 acting as an FCM4 instead of an FCM3?

    Hi Robert,

There are additional/new features in the FCM4  that cannot be active if you have a mixed array.  See the description from Denis here:  https://www.ibm.com/blog/announcement/ibm-storage-more-value-in-store/

    Cheers,

    Evelyn,

We are being told by Arrow:

It is not advise to mix FCM3 and FCM4 in the same Array. It will cause problems. They recommended a separate DRAID 6 set

Is the same matrix for FCM2 and FCM3? Can you intermix those Levels as well?

    Hi Dave,

This statement is incorrect.  FCM3 and 4s are absolutely mix and match and will be used as FRU part replacements (and in fact already are int he field this way as we have been soft launching the FCM4 in 4Q of last year).  FCM4 was designed to be an in line replacement for the FCM3 and was always intended to be a FRU or MES upgrade part.

Please tell your Arrow friends to contact IBM on this, because unless you are trying to create a new array for the new features which are only available with FCM4 you will be getting mixed arrays and this is supported and in no way an issue.

    Cheers,

We've been looking at some of the new security features which will take advantage of FCM4.  We're envious but we're not cash flush enough this year to use this as enough of an excuse to upgrade our FCM3's to FCM4's.  However that FS7300 we're looking at for 3Q for the other location may come all FCM4...

    Hi Evelyn,

Can FCM3 be used to expand an FCM2 array?  Appreciate these have been withdrawn now.

    Cheers,

    Jack

    Hi Jack ,

No. FCM2 and FCM3 are not compatible in the same array.  FCM2 and 1 are compatible pairs.  FCM 3 and 4 are compatible pairs, but between we changed the PCIe/nand technology, compression and capacities and thus they are not able to co-exist in the same array.

    Hi  Evelyn,

Where can I get more information about FCM4 support on the same FCM3 array, for FS7300, firmware level? Is it disruptive? What steps should be done beforehand, etc., thank you

    Hi Claudio -

FCM 4s are FRU parts for FCM 3 drives.  The FlashSystem 7300 shipped with support for FCM 3 and 4 drives.  This means that in the event of a failure you can just replace an FCM 3 drive with an FCM 4 drive, so there are no Storage Virtualize version considerations for this operation.

Generally, for the supported matrix of Drive types and firmware levels please reference the support pages: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/873170 (please note it is useful to filter by IBM FlashCoreModule in the table, the first digit of the Firmware will reference the generation, so FCM 3_0_1 is an FCM 3, FCM 4_0_4 is an FCM 4) or by checking the model number.

If you want to make use of the new FCM 4 features, you do need to have
1: An array with only FCM 4 drives created on Storage Virtualize version 8.6.2
2: A System running Storage Virtualize version 8.6.3
    3: Storage Insights Pro
Details of the above can be found here: FCM Product Guide

If you are intermixing with FCM3s you cannot take advantage of the FCM 4 features, so there are no software considerations other than making sure you are running a generally supported software version. See https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/690527 for recommended and supported levels (not for FCM4 specifically, but for the 7300 or other enclosure).

If you are doing a drive replace as the result of a failed drive, you just need to complete the support procedure to allow for the copyback/rebuild to complete.  In this case, if you are not running 8.7.0 or newer you should also check the firmware version of the drive and make sure it is recommended and up to date, but this can occur after you are fully redundant.

If you are expanding the array, I recommend running the CCU checker for drive firmware against the drive, updating it and then performing the Array expansion.

No other operations are required, and all of the above procedures can be found on the publications or discussed with IBM support via an open support ticket.

    I hope this helps!
