  • 1.  How to migrate DS8000 to FlashSystem

    Posted Thu January 18, 2024 09:10 AM

    Hello Community
I have a customer who wants to migrate his DS8000 storage to FlashSystem with FCM.
I want to know what tools should I use to collect all the information on the DS8000?.

StorM modeler is a valid tool to simulate IBM i workload behavior?

Thanks for the help, suggestions and recommendations.

    I appreciate it.

    Hello Diego

any tools that are able to capture the iops, block sizes, read to write ratio. Collect the data for a meaningful amount of time. From a storage point of view, the operating system is independent. For example, you can use Storage Insights or Stor2RRD. Then create 3 workloads in StorM: average, highest iops and highest throughput.  And yes, StorM is the right tool.

So which operating system other than IBM I should be migrated?
IBM I is very well described here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/migrating-ibm-i-data-current-disk-storage-different-external-disk-storage

    Best regards Patrik

    Hi Patrik,

thanks for the recommendations, I will collect with Stor2RRD to make the simulation with StorM.
The customer has IBM i and also virtualized platform with VMware and is looking to consolidate all storage on FlashSystems platform.
    Thank you.

I am not familiar with StorM.  However, according to the following:  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/i/7.5?topic=data-systems-workload-estimator IBM is pushing "IBM Systems Workload Estimator" for this kind of situation.  It has a link, however it may, or may not work.  I found it at this site:  https://www.ibm.com/it-infrastructure/resources/workload-estimator/login.html

    Hi Robert

I am reviewing the information you suggest, especially the section external storage.
    Thank you very much.

    Dear Diego

Does the existing DS8K and will the new FlashSystem serve many LPARs of mixed OSes?  I  guess the answer is yes from your post and I would suggest you also use Disk Magic tool (or find someone who knows how to use it to help you) to model the proper config of the new FS box.   But you need to obtain the total disk IO workload from the existing DS80K first as you asked in your original post.

If the existing DS8K and the new FS box serve only 1 or 2 IBM i LPARs and no more, then it will be easier to use IBM i PDI chart on disk performance to obtain disk IO workload of the existing DS8K to use in DIsk Magic for the new FS box. This IBM Technote can be useful : Getting data for Disk Magic from PDI at  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/getting-data-disk-magic-pdi.

Lastly, IBM Workload Estimator tool is for configuring high-level Power Server HW resource but nothing on high-level configuration of  SAN Box which DIsk Magic is for.
