How to change from NPIV to Transitional on IBM FS7300?

  • 1.  How to change from NPIV to Transitional on IBM FS7300?

    Posted Mon February 17, 2025 12:25 AM

    Hi, Team

The customer is using an IBM FS7300(Firmware 8.7.0.2) and wants to change the I/O group mode from NPIV to transitional. However, when attempting to make this change through the GUI, the following error message appears:

"CMMVC1044E The command failed because the fctargetportmode cannot be changed from enabled."

I would like to know if there have been similar cases and how they were resolved.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

You can use by CLI , Please the Folowing command :

    chiogrp -fctargetportmode transitional io_group_id_or_name
    • Where io_group_id_or_name is the ID or name of the I/O group.
    • Ensure that the hosts are using the NPIV ports for host I/O. To verify that you are logged in to these hosts with these NPIV ports, enter the following command
    lsfabric -host host_id_or_nam

Wait a minimum of 15 minutes before you move from transitional to enabled state. To change the NPIV setting to enabled, enter the following command:

    chiogrp -fctargetportmode enabled

    Hi,

    Thanks for your answer.

I also know the commands below.
    "chiogrp -fctargetportmode transitional io_group_id_or_name"

When executing the above command, error CMMVC1044E occurs.
Additionally, regarding lsfabric, there are no results because the FS7300 storage is not connected to the SAN.

    Thanks.

NPIV is the required  for all of the new technology in Storage Virtualize and has been best practice/default enabled to on since 2018.  Please leave it enabled, or describe the problem/concern with having it on that you are trying to resolve.

If you have other existing FlashSystem or SVC systems, please also consider changing them to enable NPIV.

    Hello,

From version 8.6.1 and onwards NPIV is always enabled and the mode cannot be changed. NPIV enabled mode is supported with all of the supported operating systems in both fabric-attached and direct-attached setups (IBM i direct attached Fibre Channel has an additional step required).

What is the problem you're trying to solve by changing the NPIV mode of the system?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Hi, I have a similar issue that requires setting the port to transactional or disable. The scenario would be this:

I have a new FS7300 storage device with version 8.7.0.3 connected directly to a Power 9 device with version 7.4 running IBM i that doesn't go through VIOS. It's completely native. When I add the host to the storage device and map the volumes, the IBM i operating system doesn't see the LUNs. According to the attached documentation, it's because direct attach isn't supported, and the port is set to disable or transactional on the storage device.

Would it be possible to force the port to change from NPIV enable to transactional or disable?

There is guidance published here for IBM i hosts that are directly attached:

    Hope that helps

    Hi Chris,

Thanks. I read this documentation, but it doesn't apply to me since the FS7300 storage already came with firmware 8.7.x.x, so the port was already enabled and it's not possible to change it to transactional or disable it. I think I'll have to downgrade to version 8.6.0.x first.

You're right that the procedure as a whole isn't applicable, but I'd expect the step in there to "enable some additional logic for converting IBM i to NPIV attached" would be relevant:

satask chfcportfeature -feature ns_discovery_auto_mode -enable yes

If in doubt, I'd encourage you to open a support ticket.  It certainly shouldn't be necessary to downgrade just to upgrade.
