Has anyone developed a method to budget Capex by month by cost code?  I want to build the capex budget at this level so I can see where we are blowing the budget up.  Unfortunately we do not have the planning module (yet).

    HI,

We have multiple customers who budget at the cost code and cost pool level. The budget is then loaded into CT and appended into the Cost Source so reports can be lite up correctly. The Expense type would determine OpEx and CapEx and the Plan Type would determine if it was actuals, budget or forecast.

Since you do not have ITP you would have to develop the budget in another tool or use excel and then upload it in.

Please let me know if I am not on the right track here for what you are looking for,

Outside of our Capitalized Labor which leverages project planning / activities, we plan all of our Capex this way. That said even with planning we still have to get "cute" to plan by month and get amortization to automatically calculate.

Basically for a specific Capex line item we create a separate line for each month with a defined production date so we can accurately project amortization / depreciation going forward.

Obviously this is a time consuming exercise and probably not the most efficient way to get this monthly breakout however we haven't found another approach that allows for dynamic and real-time feedback.

Would welcome any insight from others...

What we ended up doing was to create a CapEx budget table that looks exactly alike our Opex budget table.  I then built the CapEx budgets in excel and uploaded them.  Since we only use 4 cost codes for our Capex budgets it was pretty easy.  And each of our CapEx initiatives is a project, so we have tied the budget and actuals expenditures to a project id. From there I can see budget versus actual at a cost code level on a monthly basis on a project level.  We also incorporated inception to date figures to support multi-year capital initiatives.  I can share some of our reports if that would be useful.
