Firmware update

  • 1.  Firmware update

    Posted Tue June 27, 2023 11:27 AM

    We have a Flashsystem 5035

The system has software version 8.5.0.6 (build 157.15.2211011001000)

At logon the system asks if we want to upgrade to version 8.6.0.0

Checking at IBM support site, 8.6.0.0 is LTS.

    The system is working fine.

Is it advisable to upgrade from 8.5.0.6 to 8.6.0.0?

    Hi Gerson,

as of today, I would suggest to follow the information provided at IBM Storage Virtualize Family of Products Upgrade Planning and upgrade to 8.5.0.8

The only way to get rid of that message is indeed to upgrade to this version.

Any upgrade to another version lower than 8.6.0.0 will not remove the message.

My advice is to leave everything as is, since 8.6.0.0 is the first "8.6" version (hence .0.0) and was only released few weeks ago.

And then you may reconsider an upgrade to a 8.6.0.x version once it is more mature.

    Hiya -

Talking to the team, the GUI should not be recommending 8.6.0 just yet, for It should be recommending 8.5.0.8.

We tried this out in our lab but didn't see the same thing.  Can you help me get to resolution by providing what you see on the Settings->Update System Panel please?

    Thanks so much,

    Thanks for your repply,

We opened a ticket at IBM about 15 days ago, with the exact text in the initial post on this forum.

The call became a back and forth within IBM between sales, support and contract teams all trying to find out if our support or contract has firmware upgrade services.

But, as can be seen from the message we sent, we never made any requests for services, just a simple question:

Is it advisable to perform the update or do we leave the system as it is? Just that.

The Recommended support level is 8.5.0.8 as was linked in the responses above.

Folks moving to 8.6.0.0 are doing so for test of new features, so the answer is generally - if you are moving move to 8.5.0.8 unless you have an urgent and specific need for 8.6.0.0.

    I hope this helps.

Is there any special procedure to roll back to 8.5.0.9 after the controllers have been upgraded to 8.6.0 ?

It is technically possible, to downgrade a system to a previous release.

However, it is disruptive. That is, it will totally wipe the entire config and data.

Hello. Thanks for the caution !

This FlashSystem is not yet in any production environment. The disruption is not the issue as for now,

Is there any special process to "downgrade" the firmware or is it the same exact process as "upgrading"?

Just choose the correct test and firmware level of choice and run through the standard upgrading procedure?

Also, how much more effective is CLI vs. GUI ?

    Thanks for the help !

A disruptive software downgrade cannot be done through the regular management GUI,
it has to be done through the Service Assistant GUI instead.

    Follow these steps:

    • make sure, superuser password is known
    • each node (canister) should have a Service IP Address configured
    • test login to each Service IP via GUI or SSH
    • put each mode in SERVICE (Enter Service State)
    • once all nodes are in SERVICE, go to Manage System > Remove System Data (only shown, if node is in SERVICE)
    • once all nodes are in CANDIDATE state, go to Configure Enclosure > System ID reset. If you miss to do so, you won't be able to create a new cluster
    • Go to Re-install Software > Re-install software from a file, supply the desired software package; do this for all nodes
    • Once completed, all nodes are expected to be in CANDIDATE state with the older code level installed, ready to be configured from scratch.

A warning again: this procedure will totally destroy any existing cluster configuration!

Regarding your question on CLI vs. GUI:

Virtually all configuration tasks done in the GUI will be passed down as CLI command in the background.
That being said, it's rather a question which way one prefers.

    GUI advantages:

    • sensible configuration pre-sets, e.g. for array config et al, are chosen
    • no need to deal with parameters and options
    • intuitive interface (hopefully)

    CLI advantages:

    • possibly faster results for experienced users
    • can be scripted
    • commands can be easily repeated, parameters tweaked
    • many BASH features available, even though certain restrictions are in place compared to a "regular" BASH

Personally, I prefer CLI over GUI, eventually a mix of both turns out to be most efficient for me, depending on the goal I want to achieve.

As I stated earlier, if today you are running 8.5.0.6 and system is working fine, in my opinion there is no real need to do any upgrade at all.

IBM recommendation is to run the latest versions, but then you should schedule for an upgrade every 3 months.

In our environment we do yearly upgrades and we skip several "inbetween" versions.

You may reconsider to upgrade to 8.6.0.x in a few months when it is has proven its stability and then you are in an LTS release and can benefit from additional functions compared to 8.5.0.x
