Does DMC 3.1 replace DSM?

  • 1.  Does DMC 3.1 replace DSM?

    Posted Mon June 22, 2020 05:16 PM
We're using IBM DSM to monitor DB2 zOS and DB2 LUW.
Can we replace DSM with DMC 3.1.  The DMC product release did not mention DB2 zOS.

    Thank you

    Hi Mai

Thanks for reaching out to us. DMC introduces basic z/OS support from v3.1.1, including adding z/OS connection and basic monitor metrics in homepage. DMC will add more z/OS support capability in future releases. It will be very helpful if you share with us any particular DSM capabilities that you want to keep in DMC. How it helps achieve your job. Also any specific challenges you have met when managing both LUW and z/OS database with DSM.

Your feedback will help shape DMC into a better product. Thanks in advance!

    Hi Su Li,

Thanks for the reply.  We use DSM quite intensively to monitor all our DB2 databases - total over 250 including  DB2z, DB2 AIX and DB2 Linux. We're also a SAP shop with DB2 data sharing on zOS.

For DB2z, we really like the "Optimize/Tuning" DSM feature.  We use it a lot to tune SQLs.   DSM can issue some alerts for DB2z but not as well as for DB2 LUW.  We don't get much info on the subsystem dashboard either as we need the DB2z solution pack.  Several configuration attempts so that DSM can talk to Omegamon PE failed.

Could you please confirm if DSM will be decommissioned and replaced by DMC?  I haven't seen any new DSM release for quite some time, looks like a sign that IBM will drop the product soon.  Is there a EOS date for DSM?

    Thanks
    Mai

    Hi Mai

I am really glad to know that you use DSM intensively monitoring 200+ databases including Db2 Linux, AIX and z/OS.  We just released DMC v3.1.2 last Friday. You can download it from Fix Central to try it out.

    Here are some reference info:
To download IBM Db2 Data Management Console, go to IBM Marketing Registration Services(MRS) Tool, Marketplace, Fix Central, and DockerHub.

We have announced EOS for DSM for LUW in April 2021. It will be replaced by DMC by that time. Regarding to z/OS customers, no official EOS announcement for DSM yet since current DMC support for z/OS is still quite limited. 'Optimize/Tuning' feature one example. We do have a list of z/OS related features in DMC roadmap this year. So if you prefer keeping a regular conversation with the corresponding development team to give feedback, pls just let us know.

    Hi Su

We are facing frequent issue DB2 LUW 11.1 FIX Pack 4 (AIX) for ATS issue which generating lots of error logs filling up db2diag.log,

PMR Team suggested to implement DB2 11.1 Fixpack 5 is there any fixes without upgrade or higher version of DMC can we try out to avoid this issue..

    Please suggest..

    Hi Prashant

May you let me know the PMR # ? If it is related to DSM or DMC behavior which results in the db2dialog.log full, you may transfer it to the corresponding support team to follow up. Then L3/Dev can investigate the root cause and check if it is fixed in latest DMC release.

    Hi Prashant

I contacted L2 team to take further look of this case and will keep conversation in the case system then. If any fix needed from DMC side, we will consider to plan it in next DMC release.

    Hello Prashant,
    I checked the Db2 case TS003834579.
The userid revoked error message is from May 4.  Unless that you still having problems, this error message can be ignored.
Now related to the db2diag.log error messages:
FUNCTION: DB2 UDB, relation data serv, sqlrr_rds_common_pre1, probe:900
This is a known Db2 issue.
    Here is the workaround:
    run
    db2 "select valid, LAST_BIND_TIME from sysibm.sysplan where name like 'ATS%' "
--> if this hangs ( lock wait ) then there is an implicit rebind in progress and the instance will need to be restarted to clear this.
After instance restart, immediately run :db2 "drop package nullid.ATSO05"
    db2 "select valid, LAST_BIND_TIME from sysibm.sysplan where name like 'ATS%' "
    db2 "call admin_task_remove('fake', null)"
db2 "select valid, LAST_BIND_TIME from sysibm.sysplan where name like 'ATS%' "This should resolve the problem.

Please let me know the results.
    Thanks.

    Hi Cintia,

We can't take Db2 production DB recycle for each DB for ATS issue.. We have more than 200 PROD AIX DB and more than 500 AIX DB in Lower Environment. It will impact to business. We are looking for work around or additional fixes to fix this issue to avoid instance recycle.

. I am still waiting for CASE update resolution from PMR Team,.. If it is known issue, is there any possibility of getting additional fixes to fix this issue to avoid implementing DB2 11.1 Fixpack 5. upgrade to fix ATS issue.

We still have not tested DMC with DB2 11.1 Fix pack5 We are not sure does this ATS issue get fix in DB2 11.1 ffix pack 5

    Hello Su Li,

So does it mean we should start planning to install and use DMC to monitor DB2 LUW, but keeping DSM for Db2 zOS for a while?
Also, Prashant Shivmath has been using this post for another issue with DMC.  As a result I keep getting update on his DMC issue which is irrelevant to my post.  Could you please fix this.

    Thanks
    Mai

    Hi Mai

For Db2 LUW I highly suggest that you starting using DMC v3.1.2. We are going to add more functions to DMC next release, while DSM is more in a maintenance mode.  For your Db2 z/OS databases you probably can keep on DSM till end of this year at least. Since we are building z/OS capabilities on top of DMC now, I can connect you with the z/OS tool offering managers to further discuss your scenario and expectation on z/OS support.
