Firstly has been a few years since I did this so bear with me if i'm asking stupid questions. Basically I need to create five lpars on my P520. I have set up the hmc and the server has been initialized. My question is do I need to use a VIO server to share the network and disk?

I think I do, as when I create a new lpar it asks me which physical controllers to add it gives:

    Select U789C.001.DQD2J21-P1-T9 RAID Controller
Select U789C.001.DQD2J21-P1-T7 Universal Serial Bus UHC Spec
    Select U789C.001.DQD2J21-P1-C4 PCI-to-PCI bridge

If I give the RAID controller to this lpar and then boot it no other will be able to use the disks. Is that correct?

Also are there any good guides for setting up vio and lpars out there? Also will my DVD drive on the P520 be part of my RAID controller?

With Power6 machines I have seen, DVD/CD is part of the on-board scsi controller. But in older machines (power5), it was an IDE.

Short answer - yes you need vios, with HMC ideally you'll have dual VIOS.
p6 brings a few new toys into the mix like NPIV and HEA/IVE.
