Is this a valid configuration or will AIX 4.2.1 have install issues in this environment? We have a legacy

environment that needs to be replicated.

    Thanks.

But hey, it only takes a rainy afternoon to try, and your legacy environment is out of support anyway. So there's nothing lost by trying. Your best bet would be to use as little "advanced" features as possible. So use dedicated processors and memory, virtual SCSI and virtual Ethernet and nothing else.

Tim is right, AIX 4.x simply cannot run on any of the systems that support any kind of virtualization, VIOS or even LPARs, the operating system is simply way too old.

It is SO old it will not even support the POWER processor, the CHRP architecture (or even PCI cards), all of which are required for VIOS.

    Sorry, you'll need another solution.

AIX is VERY VERY backwards compatible though so if you can try installing your application on to AIX 5.2 / 5.3 / 6.1 / 7.1 then you may be able to keep it alive.

Newer instances of AIX support WPAR so if you can install an AIX 6.1 / 7.1 LPAR and then install an AIX 5.2 / 5.2 WPAR onto that, then install your application, you can even still get support even though AIX 5.2 and 5.3 are now past their end of support date because they are still still supported in an WPAR environment.
