We are currently CQM (Sybase backend database) and started looking at DataSets & DataModules while on 11.1.5. Though the docs had said that DataSets worked with CQM we discovered that in fact they didn't (confirmed by a support ticket).
We started testing converting our FM packages to DQM and discovered a lot of incompatibilities (we've been using Cognos since Decision Stream 7) including things like calculated fields and cross-package joins that are not supported in DQM. We wanted to push to get to 11.1.7 before continuing the work towards DQM. Having just completed that we're back to looking at DQM conversion.
While it's interesting to see that Cognos might do a conversion at run-time, I'm sure it would still break with those calculated fields (that we need to push back and make REAL fields in the database) and cross-package joins, and the other concern would be the performance impact.
Depending on the complexity of your FM packages you might see better mileage with the "just in time conversion" but we know at least with our environment it needs to be a full DQM conversion.

Subject: DATA MODULE and CQM
Hi Daniel and Kiran,
I too was baffled after having the same experience. How are my CQM packages able to run when used with a data module (DM) especially when IBM's documentation doesn't mention CQM package support? The short answer I got from IBM is that at runtime, Cognos converts CQM packages used within DM to DQM packages, thus providing CQM support.
That's 'bout all I know thus far. I too am eager for IBM's comments.

Hi Daniel,
Initially when DMs were introduced in 11.0 stream, they were supporting only DQM packages. But later on, the support for CQM was also added but I think they have to conform to the modelling guidelines. Documentation might not have been updated but I will let someone from IBM comment.
