  • 1.  Data change when exporting from Quatrics to SPSS

I collected data from an online participant recruitment site, requesting only participants 18 and older. The survey was administered via Qualtrics. I asked the participants to report their ages by means of a drop-down menu (which started at age 18). According to Qualtrics, all of the participants selected an age of 18 or older, but when I exported the data to SPSS, there were ten participants who had an age under the age of 18. This is a real puzzle, since they couldn't have selected those younger ages on Qualtrics. When I exported the data from Qualtrics to Excel, the younger ages do not show. When I opened the Excel file with SPSS, the age variable reverts to the younger ages. I have been in touch with Qualtrics support about this and they are also bewildered. It seems that it is an SPSS issue, but I don't know what is causing this.

Are you saying this changes on the same record?  Maybe there are some empty records that get brought in on import.

How is the age variable coded?  Might missing be coded as 0?

I figured out the problem. It wasn't an SPSS issue per se, but rather a Qualtrics issue. Qualtrics was subtracting 3 from every age, thus coding 18-year-olds as 15, 19-year-olds as 16, etc. That coding was maintained when exporting to SPSS, but not when exporting to Excel. I don't know why it happened, but I have recoded the data and all is well.
