  • 1.  Ctrl+ Drag/Drop for data items in a query not copying

    Posted 05/22/26 05:17 AM
Edited by Marc Reed 05/22/26 05:32 AM

    Hi all,

A standard windows gesture is to hold ctrl when drag/drop to duplicate an item. I use this all the time when editing reports.

However, I thought I could also do this within the Query Data Items window.

For example ctrl+Drag/Drop Quarter label would create a duplicate.

Can anyone confirm if I am misremembering, or does ctrl+drag/drop work here and I need to do further investigation why it has stopped working.

Ctrl+Drag/Drop works ok for me in other parts of Report Studio, such as on the page, or even in the queries window.

We haven't upgraded in CA components recently so it's not a change in CA. I am thinking it may be local browser policies changing. But need to confirm the function used to work before I dig deeper.

    Hi Marc,

I have also experienced this lately. Believe I saw this after upgrading to 12.1.1 or 12.1.2.

    Conclusion, you remember correctly.

Same issue here, but I have a workaround. After you CTRL-click, hold and release SHIFT before you drop the copy. You will see the plus sign again and can copy the data item now.

The easiest way (for me) to do this is:

    1. via Shift and/or Ctrl, select items to be copied. The selection will be marked in a gray background.
    2. drag the selection to the desired place in the list, and keep holding the mouse button down. A horizontal line displays the place where the items wil be put. Now stop moving.
    3. while still holding the mouse button down, also press Ctrl. A small + icon appears while holding Ctrl and not moving the mouse.
    4. now lift the mouse click and the selected items will be copied to the desired place in the list.

This works at least in 12.1.x and both in Chrome and Edge.

Thanks all for confirming that I wasn't mis-remembering. I would guess that this must be a change to the browser that is having this affect for all of us.

We had found the same work around as used by Marc van Waardenburg.

Can someone from IBM log this against the browser engines?
