  • 1.  Cognos Series 7 migration tools?

    Posted Wed August 27, 2025 10:18 AM

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice. We have a customer on Series 7 Impromptu who needs to move to C11 or C12.

I remember doing a big project about 13 years ago where we moved a customer from C7 to C10 and there was a suite of migration tools available that converted the catalog into a framework manager model, and converted the impromptu reports into report studio reports. However I can't find any reference to these tools anywhere. Have they been retired? If not, does anyone have any links to documentation / download?

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi John,

From what I can see in Cognos 11, it's still possible to import certain objects related to Impromptu - I haven't done that in a long time, so I'm not sure how it works in this version.

Additionally, I found in my archive the probable names of the tools (for Cognos 8.1.2 MR2) that were included in the installation packages:

    • Architect Model Migration Tool 8.1.2 MR2 Windows   (3,344,314 bytes)   arch2fm_win32_8.1.209.11_ml.tar.gz
    • Cognos BI Series 7 Migration and Upgrade Tools 8.1.2 MR2 Windows   (12,288,117 bytes)   migs7_win32_8.1.209.11_ml.tar.gz

Unfortunately, I currently have no physical way to check further (until Monday).

I hope this at least helps a little…

Thanks for replying! That helps, but the biggest issue we are facing is the migration of the impromptu reports - there's many hundreds. Without the report migration tool, a rewrite is looking like the only option.

    Hi John,

The tricky part is to retrieve the software (from Cognos Impromptu v7.5, not supported since April 2023) that will convert your catalog file to an XML file. I believe it was called impcat2xml or a similar name.

I'm not sure if IBM can provide this impcat2xml program.

    Best regards,

Thanks! I think we can locate impcat2xml, the biggest issue is the deploytoc8 part of the process to convert the impromptu reports to report studio - without the migration tools, we'll probably need to rewrite, and there's many hundreds of reports.

    Hi John,

check out Fix Central, search for "Cognos Migration". The list should return what you're looking for.
Here a link to a PDF, which should be included in the tools too: https://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/documentation/docs/en/10.2.1/ug_mfdm.pdf

I understand that you try to avoid re-creating all your reports. On the other hand. Starting from scratch gives you the opportunity to rethink your reporting and propably do some of them using new features in Cognos 11 or 12.

    Good luck!

    Regards

    Gertrud

Hey John - we've got a tool that can handle the namespace migration part of that, if need be. Happy to connect - "champion to champion" to see if it might help.

    Hello John,

As I can remember you have three tools which are impcat2xml to migrate catalogs, migratetoc8 to migrate reports and deploytoc8 to deploy converted reports to portal. Not sure that migratetoc8 and deploy toc8 will work with a c11 portal.

To use each of these tools, you must have a Impromptu 7.2 or 7.3 installed, otherwise the use of mig7 tools will be blocked (hardcoded). Last 7.5 release cant be used to migrate.

    So ...... Good luck !
