REST API definitely would be the better choice IMHO.

You alsoy may have noted, that Storage Virtualize 8.6 introduced features to limit CIM access for certain user groups. This is policed through CLI commands chsecurity respectively chusergrp.

Not only should you be moving to the REST API you should be doing so with alacrity.  We are going to be turning off the CIMOM in an upcoming release, it is already off by default in 8.6.0 where we give you the ability to turn it off or on.

The CIMOM has been in maintenance mode for years now, and does not have many of the latest features/visibility to the new management constructs for easier automation.
