I am trying to set up a procedure how to create bootable mksysb tapes on other than backed up server. Seems one of big obstacles is bosboot command that writes directly to tape.

But there is "-b FileName" switch: "Uses specified file name as the boot image name. This flag is optional."

So my idea is to make use of that swith and resulting file could be put on to tape on another server. Is it possible? And what should be the procedure/commands?

Also is it possible to run bosboot even when there is no tape drive right now attached to LPAR? Or if the drive is there but is empty... Of course it should create image for a bootable tape.

    So can anybody advice?

    Thanks

at the end I created a complete procedure how to create bootable tape on another server, I put it on my blog , though I did not tested it - I mean I did not have an opportunity to restore any server from such tape as by now.
However I am still interested to hear any experiences or comments to the procedure.
