I have had some trouble pushing a nim image to my recently received P520. This is an image I have pushed to several other P series servers with great success.

After choosing to boot from the network from within the SMS menu, the host successfully issues a bootp request, and begins the download of the installer via tftp.

However, after I receive the splash screen (which describes the kernel, boot image timestamp etc), it seems to hang. The error code I receive is 0c31, which seems to be related to the console.

The thing that is a bit confusing for me is that I can access the service processor through Serial-1 or Serial-2, but then the SMS menu is only reachable through the Serial-2 regardless of what I do.

My feeling is that the installer is looking for Serial-1 after it starts to boot, but because I kicked off the download off network through Serial-2, it won't output to Serial-1 now.

Anyone who has seen something similar, please let me know.

    Thanks.

    What AIX oslevel -r / -s ?

If 5.3 do you have the vty drivers in your NIM immage / spot?

0c31 means select the console, it should put a message on each display / serial port at this point asking you to press a number (on the qwerty side of the keyboard) to select that device as the console and to continue the install.

Have you tried putting the console back on s1 and hitting 1 at this point?

    What are your console settings?

Does it have a graphics card?

SMS only on s2 is odd. Have you tried rebooting the service processor? Either pull the power for 20 seconds, or use the pinhole reset on the op panel while the system is at stand-by.

Has it an HMC? and what does the HMC= show on the op panel?

Have you been into the ASMI and checked the serial port settings? Do they match your console?

Is your serial cable and terminal working OK on other RS6k / pSeries systems?

I guess the service processor and the SMS menu are both available on both ports by default.

I reset the service processor after plugging into the S1 port, and then it seemed to work.

I have a feeling that I could have obtained the same results by simply choosing the console in the SMS menu, but I did not confirm.
