My AIX p520 server is hanging. I wanted to change to virtual machine with lpars but don't have the VIO software and cant get hold of one in time. I have completed the following actions:

    Attached server to hmc.
    Deleted main partition profile.
    Created a VIO server
    Scrapped the VIO server
Created a new profile which had all the server resources.
    Booted server.

It gets to the following screen and gets no further, there is no error or reference code:

    Welcome to AIX.
    boot image timestamp: 14:24 11/24
The current time and date: 09:52:38 06/29/2010
processor count: 4; memory size: 15744MB; kernel size: 25705772
    boot device: /pci@800000020000200/pci1014,02BD@1/sas/disk@40200

Is the boot CD an original CD or a copy of one? I have seen a bad CD act like this. I am guessing you are booting from the CD rom, opposed to a NIM server. Oh wait... The AIX message make it look like it is booting from a SAS disk. Are you trying to boot from the original hdisk prior to your attempt to put the VIO server on this system?

What is the reference code seen on the HMC for this partition?

What is the history of this system?

What type of console are you using, lft / serial / hmc / etc?
Did you boot to SMS on the way and set the console there?

I am trying to boot from the SAS hard disk which has AIX 6.1 installed and yes after my VIO attempt.
There is no reference code shown on the hmc for that partition.

The server used to be a standalone server no hmc using all resources for the single AIX 6.1 install.
I attached hmc and configured server.
    Removed the only partition profile.
Created a few test ones which i have removed.
Decided to revert back to single profile with all system resources.
Created a single profile with all system resources.
Tried to boot which gives the hang.
The server is still attached to the hmc and I would like to keep it attached to the hmc.
I haven't set the console via the sms menu do I need to?

How long did you let it sit in the "hang" state.

If you watch the reference codes on the HMC, what was the last reference code seen

Sounds like you might need to set the console to your tty session, not the video card. Can't say exactly how to do that from memory. Can you find the place to do that? Or is removing the video card an option?

Sorry I am confusing your post with another and thought you had added a video card. But it might still be the case if there is a display on this system it might be waiting for someone to select it as the console.

Do you have a graphics card, if so try a monitor on it, I think you will also need a keyboard attached or it will find no keyboard, assume there is no lft and not configure the graphics card, even if it is the console...

Or boot to SMS with an open vterm console from the HMC and then in SMS set the console and then try again.
