AS2 solutions for IBM i

    Hi,

We've been using Zmod AS2 and sFTP for years but the product is no longer being supported. What are IBM i shops using out there for these transfers?

For SFTP we are using our code via PASE to have full control also on db local logging of the exchange, exception, integration (RPG calls).

I noticed that ever increasing number of commercial partners are accepting SFTP beside AS2.

We don't have many AS2 or OFTP2 partners, so I've resorted to an external internet cloud service that just accepts inbound/outbound via FTP side channel, to ease interfacing from the ibmi, while they run the AS2 part for an acceptable fee, and I keep the workflow the same.

I don't want to advertise here, but such services are easily found via web search, and even a major public cloud has AS2 service in their suite, depending on the needs and volumes.

I too would be interested if somebody have a full - especially if open source - AS2 full on IBMi  experience to share, to investigate the possibilities for a full direct on prem solution. I know that there are some (open or not) full java implementations, so they should be runnable directly on ibmi, although I don't know the status or quality of such components but it would be nice to hear some experience.

We use our own SFTP scripts/connection...

For AS2, we use two different servers

    1. OpenText (formerly Inovis) BizConnect (windows server)
    2. Mendelson AS2 (windows server) - this is open source, but we pay a small fee to get support - simple and works great.

But what if the OP is running IBM i 7.6?  GoAnywhere just came out with a major new release and still they do not support IBM i 7.6.

The new release of GoAnywhere brings Java 17 and it is now tested for IBM i 7.6.

The next release or the new release?

The newest release 7.9.1 of GoAnywhere MFT from November 24th does not mention Java 17 in the release notes nor in the installation manual.

Hi, the reason we didn't list the support of Java 17/21 in the release notes as we have not yet implemented all the new features that can take advantage of Java 17+ . To confirm; Java 17 and Java 21 is supported in GA with version GA 7.9.1 and will run on IBM i V7R6.

Thanks for clarifying this, great to see GA run on Java 17 and 21 and on i 7.6.

I would advice to list this support in the documentation, even though GA would not take full advantage of Java 17 and later versions. Currently it states Java 11 only, which indicates GA will not run on 7.6 and may prohibit users from running or testing GA on the new IBM i release.

Keep up the good work and don't be shy on documenting the newest supported environment...

I am running Version 7.9.1 Build 41.  I ran CFGGA and changed Java from 11 to 17.  So far it's working for what I use it for.  I verified it's using Java 17 with

     SELECT java_home, j.JOB_NAME, j.JOB_NAME_SHORT, j.JOB_USER, j.USER_DIRECTORY
     FROM QSYS2.JVM_INFO j
        ORDER BY java_home DESC

    Hello,

GoAnywhere MFT a browser based solution that did originate on the IBM i (AS400) that can easily be configured as a Client or Server for AS2, SFTP, FTPS, HTTPS and more.  To expand a bit more then what you are asking, with GoAnywhere, you will be able to push and pull files automatically, encrypt data at rest and in motion, full auditing, and reporting.

Hi Kath, i can confirm that Fortra GoAnyWhere is the right solution to use AS2 protocol with a web GUI.

We did a great project in 2025 into an international bank to solve AS2 and PeSIT transaction.

    Have a good day.
