Anyone pull in data via an API to ServiceNow Query Builder?

  • 1.  Anyone pull in data via an API to ServiceNow Query Builder?

    Posted Fri April 30, 2021 12:43 PM
Is there anyone out there that has an automated datalink connection to ServiceNow Query Builder?  We have queries made for our Service Mapping & Discovery which shows which applications are associated to which servers.   Since these queries are not typical tables or reports has anyone figured out a way to pull them into Apptio easily via an API or existing connection?

    Thanks

Ha, I was just trying to do the exact same thing!  I have about five queries built that I'd love to just pop in that URL and create a connector, but alas.. πŸ˜₯  Our CSM believes it either has to point to a table or a report, so now I'm trying to get them converted to reports with the help of our ITSM team.

We were told we cannot convert our query builder queries into reports because of what it does in the backend.

Oh great.  I'll be in touch with them about that.  Gotta figure out a way to get that data automagically pushed to Apptio.

We write a report in ServiceNow and then use a ServiceNow (Report) Connector to pull in the data.

Hoping our ITSM team can create us some reports based off the queries we use then.  Not everyone has access to build reports (myself included).  I think they lock it down so they can better control the environment.

Jenny / Craig - I could be late to the party here, but have you tried the new DL ServiceNow custom connector that launched recently as part of the new ServiceNow integration?

The DL team have worked with ServiceNow to create predefined ServiceNow connectors to better integrate the solutions, inc a custom connector. This can be used to pull in data from any other table (not included with the predefined connectors), custom report or custom url having a RESTful endpoint.

Hi @Aaron Russell, not yet, but definitely interested!  Are you saying I can use a pre-existing query URL to create the connector?  Totally green on connectors, btw.  I've created connectors off Apptio reports or tables, but that's about it. ;)

We're trying to set up a REST connector to access data stored in Azure. We're struggling, because of some mysterious issue with credentials. Yes, you can specify the URL associated to the RESTful API and the connector is supposed to pick up the data. We're not there yet, as we cannot (yet) establish the connection, because of said configuration issue.
The really bad thing is that I cannot even save the connector, so that Support can look at it. When setting the connector up, it fails the token validation (esoteric) and Datalink refuses to save it πŸ˜’
    We'll crack it-eventually πŸ±β€πŸ‘€πŸ˜œπŸ±β€πŸš€πŸ˜πŸ‘

Hey @Guillermo Cuadrado - hope you're able to crack the case soon!  Maybe you can screenshot the issue, send it to support, and see if they can replicate on their end or do a Zoom call to walk through it? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ  Still trying to figure out the URL situation on my end. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ€ͺ

Yes, @Jenny Franklin. I've been trying to get that call set up. Support/Engineering keep pushing me back, asking me to double-/triple-check the Datalink & Microsoft documentation. At the end of the process I could become a cloud API "expert"-if our IAM people would grant me the access I need to understand what I'm doing for real. πŸ˜’πŸ˜œπŸ±β€πŸ‰πŸ±β€πŸ‘€πŸ±β€πŸ’»

@Guillermo Cuadrado do they take bribes?  Like, "I'll give you an Amazon gift card if you can just help me do x..."  I ain't beneath doing that πŸ˜‚β€‹β€‹

Hi Jenny, I believe the new ServiceNow custom connector in datalink allows you to send a pre-existing query.

    There's some documentation here ->
    https://help.apptio.com/en-us/datalink/c-servicenow-dl.htm
    and
    https://help.apptio.com/en-us/datalink/sn_ingress_connector_faq.htm

If you need more help, have your CS team reach out and I can point them at the relevant Apptio people.

Hey @Michelle McGuire!  I have report URLs now, but how in the world do you reformat the URL to be REST or JSON acceptable?  It doesn't like me just plopping the URL as it is in there - get all sorts of syntax errors.  Would be so nice if there was a URL converter online somewhere.  Kinda like Bitly, but instead of shortening the URL, it makes it REST/JSON acceptable lol.  I can dream. 😝  Can you let me know how you modified your report URLs?  Thank you thank you!! πŸ™ŒπŸ˜

    Hello Jenny and company,

You have to create a new connector as "Rest Service".  Below is a copy of our redacted configured REST API for our Applications Table.  I love this one because it brings in the display values.  This way you don't have to look them up in the syschoices table.  If you wish to use a JSON instead of XML you can check the box shown highlighted in red below.  I don't think I have ever use JSON passthrough; but Your ServiceNow Admin would be able to help you with that or maybe the ServiceNow wikii.

@Michelle McGuire Whoops - just now zooming into the pic to see the URL - do you have a pic that shows the Report URL?  Looks like that one points directly to the Table itself. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

@Michelle McGuire - I was using the "ServiceNow REST" connector when I should have just been using the "ServiceNow" one.  The latter allows you to plug in the Report ID. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ  All connectors up and running nicely now - whew!  Talk about a crash course in Datalink lol  #baptismbyfire
