I need to add a column to a table that has approx 5 million rows.

The mentioned table is affected by OLTP and Batch process.

Can someone confirm what would be the best method, taking into account performance and concurrency?

Do you have by any chance a database maintenance window where the db change could be materialized? Or a time frame where OLTP workload & Batch process are considered to be low? If so, please consider that to best accommodate the db change and minimize major impacts to the process running against the system.
