Active Report Viewer

    Does the new Active Report Viewer function with CA 11.1.7 Active Reports?
    Or, is it only CA 11.2 specific?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cognos Analytics - 11.0.0 to Current

    Hi Bill,

    About 3 months ago, IBM told us that a Windows and a MAC version were been developed​. As of today, there is only a Windows version. @RACHEL SU, do you have any feedback on this MAC release?

    Hi Patrick,

    Due to licensing issue, we are not able to release a MAC version right now. Active Report was never supported on MAC so this was not part of the initial MVP. However, I would like to gather customers' interest on this. It will help us to evaluate the priority.

    Clarification on licensing would be helpful e.g. if a client generates a mht file from CA, obviously the person generating the mht file needs a licence but if users pick up mht file from network drive and download the Active Report Viewer from the Accelerator Catalog to view, do they need a CA licence?  Similar to the debate about pdf files ...

    There is no license associated with using this Active Report app. It's free to anyone. It remains as a separate tool. Won't be part of the 11.2.1 install.

    I believe the real question here is this:

    Does a person opening an active report - regardless of how they open it (using this new viewer, using a browser with MHT support, etc.) need a Viewer license (at least) to open it?

    Not so much a license question on the Viewer tool itself -- but on the act of opening an MHT generated by Cognos.  Do I need a license to view the Active Report?

    In the past, the answer has been "Yes - you need a Viewer license to open a any Cognos report in any format  if the report has been personalized to the recipient".   

    So an (active) report output that goes to the whole company does not require a license.  But an (active) report that was burst to the recipient or run specifically for a recipient (ex: run by a license holder using prompts specific to that person or group of people they're sending the output to) does require a Viewer license to receive and use.

    IBM:  Is this still an accurate statement of the facts?

    Hi Richard,

    my latest information here is: every person who receives a report output via IBM Cognos software involved (CA portal or via scheduled e-mail) needs at least a viewer license. If I run 500 reports via schedules and send them just to me and I do the distribution to the other recipients, all of them don't need a license. It's just me who needs a license. If I set up 500 different schedules where every person gets the report output directly from Cognos, they all need a license accordingly.

    Yes Rich, it has always been my understanding that for a Cognos report that is "not personalized to the recipient", a Cognos license of any sort is not required - which was, as you point out, the real point of my question.

    Again, IBM can you make clear the licensing position on non-personalized report distribution in any format, active report (.mht files) included.
    Is a Viewer license, at minimum, required?

    I might have replied privately only so it didn't show up here. This is how I explained:

    Just like PDF or Excel outputs, if the user logs into Cognos to retrieve the outputs, this user needs Cognos license. So if the user logs in to Cognos to run an active report, or to simply download the mht file, this requires Cognos license.

    If the user receives mht or any other report output formats from Cognos sent via schedule or busting for distribution, this user requires license.

    If the user received a mht file shared outside of Cognos (someone emailed the mht file or host it on shared drive), then this user does not interact with Cognos system, this does not require Cognos license.

    Hope this clarifies.

    Hi Adam,

    I've tested the Viewer with 11.0.13 Active Reports, it works perfectly.
    So I think you can use it with any versions of Cognos Analytics.
