70 Day License Limit on IBM i instance ?

  • 1.  70 Day License Limit on IBM i instance ?

    Posted Mon November 10, 2025 07:14 PM

    Hi All,

I want to use a Power VS IBM i instance and set up the system one time and save as a template.

It looks like the IBMi license and ADTS license expires after 70 days.

Q: Are customers expected to purchase additional licenses to be able to use an IBMi instance longer than 70 days ?

Q: When I save a copy of my IBMi instance with cloud init enabled (*ENABLECI) and use it as a template for a new instance, the keys are not reset and it does not inject new license keys. Should it be injecting new temporary keys ?

I'm new with PowerVS and trying to understand the licensing nuances.  I do a lot of software development and testing and this could be useful if I don't have to start/rebuild all my apps on a new instance each time.

Thanks in advance for your input

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

sorry for my delay replying on private chat.

It looks like the IBMi license and ADTS license expires after 70 days.

There is a process running on weekends to inject licenses.  The procedure to check licenses is different from your on-prem system (you will not see anything with DSPLICKEY).

If you wait for the weekend and you have the cloud-init installed, you will get your keys.

Q: Are customers expected to purchase additional licenses to be able to use an IBMi instance longer than 70 days ?

No, the licenses are part of the service. There are some components like Rational you need to select when creating your VSI

Q: When I save a copy of my IBMi instance with cloud init enabled (*ENABLECI) and use it as a template for a new instance, the keys are not reset and it does not inject new license keys. Should it be injecting new temporary keys ?

Again, the licenses are part of your service. Check the documentation regarding License Keys. If you have an issue, you can open a ticket with the Support team.
