  • 1.  3x FCM using RAID-1 plus hot spare for small workloads

    Posted 24 days ago

I'm looking to move customer workloads from internal SAS drives to FS5300.

The workloads are small and at peak would not exceed 9,000 IOPs at a push.

    Capacity is around 2TB.

I recall a few years ago IBM talking about RAID-1 plus hot spare using FCMs for small workloads.

It looks like it's a good fit but has anyone got experience of this in a small environment?

Yes, you can use DRaid1 on the FlashSystem 5300, and it will perform beyond your expectations. You didn't specify the block size or the read/write ratio for this 9000 iops. Assuming it's a classic mixed workload, this configuration will provide more than ten times what you need. Also, if you buy the Operational Resiliency Bundle, the customer will have real-time ransomware detection capabilities on the storage layer.

    Thanks.

There's nothing out of the ordinary about the workloads.

I think you need to be using D-RAID 6 with a minimum of 6 FCM4s to qualify got Operational Resilience Bundle.

I've seen recommendations saying I be careful with RAID-1 and to use D-RAiD5 instead with 4 x FCM4s.
