  • 1.  IDMS archival requirement

    Dear all,

I would like to understand about the suitability of the InfoSphere Optim for the below requirement:

    Background:

    • The requirement is to archive data that is currently in a system z mainframe to an archival solution, and decommission the mainframe.
      · The data includes flat files, VSAM, DB2, IDMS, and possibly some Datacom as well.
      · Some of the data has litigation-hold on them, and hence should not be transformed or modified in any way during archival.

    Questions:

    1. Can InfoSphere Optim solution (Optim Data Growth solution or any other Optim solutions) be used for above requirement?
      2. Will Optim ensure the handling requirements of data with litigation hold in the IDMS data? (i.e., by avoiding any layout transformation or EBCDIC to ASCII conversions during archival and retrieval)
      3. If IDMS data is archived to Optim, can it be retrieved later when the mainframe is not available anymore?
Please let me know if you have any suggestions regarding the above.

    Regards,
    Ashok

Start here.  It's a bit old (2011) but still relevant.

We've archived over 40,000 tables (VSAM, IMS, Datacom), etc.. with InfoSphere.

    Hi Danny,

Thanks for pointing me to the redbook. It has valuable information.
In chapter 7, the options to view the archived data are explained. I understand there is a browse utility to view archived data in optim without having to restore to the original data base. So, I believe that it should be possible to view the archived IDMS data without having the mainframe or IDMS available.
But, I also find that the Federation server needed for IDMS access runs in z/OS. This Federation server will be required while creating relational table views from IDMS schemas and in extracting data from mainframe IDMS. I just would like to know if this Federation server on z/OS will not be required when we use the browse facility in Optim to view the archived IDMS data. Please let me know if anyone has actually tried this.

Yes, data can be accessed via several methods once it has been archived to Optim no matter if it's relational or hierarchical . That's literally the purpose for archiving for retirement.  Optim ODBC/JDBC drivers allow for pretty much any DB client to access the archives but you need a proxy like Optim Connect Server to create and provision the Data Source to the Optim archive file. You can also access data that has been archived by Optim using the Optim classic console or GUI, but this approach is really only for Archive admin type access with limited search capabilities. You can also use Optim Connect Server/Studio as a bi-directional go between from source systems to Optim and vise versa.

Now we're starting to venture into the consulting level detail and discussions so my input to the thread will start to taper off a bit. ;-)

For mainframe z/OS (let's say Datacom) you would need the Classic Data Architect to do the mapping from copybooks. You would need a piece of software installed on the mainframe so that the Federation Tier 2 staging can talk back and forth between the source system and the Tier 2 staging system (in most cases DB2 Federation) but keep in mind that DB2 Federation is out of support as of last year I believe. And then Optim can talk to DB2 Fed to ingest the mainframe data or even be used to provision access to the Optim archived data as a proxy. ("a federated data source")
