Important Announcement for the Planning Analytics on Cloud Rich Tier (Remote Desktop)

By Tracy Peppy posted 23 days ago

The IBM Planning Analytics on Cloud team is announcing that targeting mid-September 2024, the Rich Tier Desktop will be no longer be accessible for Planning Analytics on Cloud Modelers.

Why are we making this change?

To improve the user experience for our cloud clients, we are removing the dependency on the Rich Tier Desktop and moving feature capabilities into Workspace. For Architect, Perspectives and Performance Modeler, the modern clients are Planning Analytics Workspace Modeling and Planning Analytics for Excel. The go forward replacement for TM1 Applications is the Applications and Plans feature in Planning Analytics Workspace.

How will I perform my file management?

Some exciting new capabilities to manage files in Planning Analytics in the Modeling Workbench File Management Experience (zip/unzip/copy/paste) have just been released in Workspace version 95. This first set of capabilities will allow some actions performed on the Rich Tier to be performed in a more intuitive and simplified way though the Workbench. We are planning to enhance this set of capabilities in upcoming releases, with the intent to be able to manipulate database object files also through this same experience.

Please note: After the transition away from the Remote Desktop, FTP/SFTP can still be used to manage files to/from the cloud. (no change)

How will I be impacted?

After the target timeline in September, you will no longer be able to login to the Rich Tier Desktop including access to all installed legacy applications. In preparation, we recommend that you retrieve any necessary files you would like to keep, that you may have stored outside the S:\ drive, and transfer them locally and start to get familiar with the new File Manager capabilities that can help you manage files.

If you are still using the legacy clients on the Remote Desktop, we invite you to start the journey to move towards Planning Analytics Workspace, Planning Analytics for Microsoft Excel.

Reminders will be soon be posted on the login screen and on the Rich Tier Desktop with links to up-to date information.

Where can I get more information?

Please refer to this blog which outlines some considerations and best practices around moving from the legacy TM1 clients.

If you believe you need a Rich Tier beyond September 2024, please reach out to Product Management to discuss your specific use cases. We are happy to help.

I echo the issues raised by Wim below.  We can almost certainly find workarounds, but the loss of direct access to the operating system is likely to be painful, particularly with respect to file management and local backups.  I use DOS FINDSTR a lot (rather than NotePad++) and echo the need for a file search function.

I rarely use Architect or Perspectives these days, though I recall that there are a handful of items that have not yet been replicated in PAW, including Performance Monitor and direct visibility of cube sizes.  In addition, I don’t believe the Check Feeders function is reliable in PAW/PAFE (it claims cells are fed when they aren't), whereas it is in Architect/Perspectives.

Hello,

Thanks a lot for informing.

I have a few queries around tasks we are currently performing with applications available in RDP:

  • What happens to Powershell-linked commands? For example, we use the Powershell command window to automatically send emails through TI processes.
  • What happens to the commands executed via Chores to create zipped back-up folders in the night? I understand we will have access to the S: folders via File Manager, but need to have further understanding around the way automated Commands (if?) will work.

Hello,

We use Performance Modeler and Perspective to create and deploy TM1 Applications. We are managing these by logging to the Cloud server by remote desktop connection.

Would it be available in future to use.

Thanks

Hello,

As mentioned in the previous comments, we use Remote Desktop mainly for PA support that is unavailable in Workspace or PAfE. Most of the PA administration and development is already done in Workspace.

One of the functionality missing in Workspace are daily backups of the PA database files. Currently, we use 7zip in combination with Turbo Integrator processes och chores, which is administered via Remote Desktop.

The new File Manager is an improvement, but it does not allow daily backups yet:

  • It does not provide access to database files (it only gives access to model_upload folder)
  • The compression cannot be scheduled via Turbo Integrator
  • The zipfiles cannot be automatically re-named or re-located

The daily backups are an important part of PA support. We will need it once the Remote Desktop is deprecated.

Hello,

Same as Wim and also Perspective Feature not yet enabled in PAFE.

One of my Cloud customers use Perspective to generate 55 excel files (with  print out a snapshoot report) and manually sends each of these files to as many users, who then enter their data into the file and deposit it in a directory where TurboIntegrator processes it. (although TI still can't read Excel files, which means they have to be transformed into CSV files).

What will my customer do if he can no longer use Perspective?

Regards,

Philippe

Hello, my first thoughts go to actions like:

  • running PowerShell or similar for automation of what would otherwise be impossible or extremely inefficient. For instance, moving private views and subsets and applications from 1 user to another, caused by the fact that the files are saved in different folders. Private applications are even more a nightmare. What is the recommended solution actually by IBM for private applications ? They could be anywhere under }Applications so searching manually is not a solution. I tried the TM1 REST API, no solution either.
  • deleting thousands of files (a model with 10s of thousands of permant views and subsets that should have been temporary in the first place and did not get cleared). Deleting lots of files from FileZilla takes ages compared to doing it in rdp.
  • deleting 10s of thousands of .hdr and .res files, following asynchronous processes and the TM1 server does not automatically clear those temporary files
  • using Notepad++ (portable) to search in files, typically .pro files and .rux files, but also .vue and .sub. Is this a capability that will come to PAW, searching for a string in all/certain processes and rules ?
  • how to copy from prod to dev, is FileZilla or other FTP client the only solution ? Some companies block that traffic so no solution for them. With 1 rdp and 2 File Explorer's side by side was so easy.
  • using 7zip (portable) to be able to create a daily backup from a chore
  • using WinMerge (portable) to compare files and folders, for instance when migrating objects.

Will we still work with an ACLS.txt text file for folder rights ?

While I do understand the reasoning, this change can be quite severe for actions like outlined above.
