Best Practices for Transitioning from Legacy TM1 Components to IBM Planning Analytics

By SAMI EL CHEIKH posted Tue April 23, 2024 03:25 PM

In preparation of migrating your content to Planning Analytics modern interfaces like Planning Analytics for Excel and Planning Analytics Workspace, please keep the following guidelines in mind:

  1. To run Perspectives reports in our modern interfaces, ensure that Planning Analytics Workspace is running, the connection URL is the Workspace URL and that Perspectives has been disabled or uninstalled.

  2. We recommend utilizing 64-bit Excel as a foundation for the Planning Analytics for Excel add-in for memory and performance optimization.

  3. In the Excel settings, “Optimize for Compatibility” as referenced here.

  4. Get onto the latest versions of Planning Analytics for Excel, Planning Analytics Workspace and TM1 Server.

  5. If your Perspectives reports have action buttons, upgrade them in the Options screen in Perspectives under “Action Button Settings”.

Below is a list of task/feature comparisons between IBM Planning Analytics legacy components such as Perspectives and TM1 Architect.

Requires Perspectives installer

PAfE is a self-contained file

Refresh

Perspectives refreshes on writeback

PAfE doesn’t refresh on writeback by default

PAfE can duplicate Perspectives behavior although not recommended due to performance concerns.

User group creation

Perspectives can create users and groups that can manage tm1 server.

User groups can be created and managed in PAW.

@Paul Coggan  You can rollback transactions via PAW through Modeling Workbench.  Select the vertical menu (3 dots) beside the TM1 Database name->Logs->Transaction log.  Query for the transactions, and select which one(s) then the Rollback button appears in the blue ribbon.

Another point of difference to add to the list is that PAW and PAfE do not currently support use of transaction logs to recover or reverse data changes.
