What's New in AI for Cognos Analytics 12.0.1

By Rodrigo de Andrade posted Tue September 26, 2023 10:33 AM

I'm delighted to announce the arrival of Cognos Analytics 12.0.1. I'm also proud to say that in this release our  commitment  and dedication to making analytics accessible for everyone continues to be a top priority.

Cognos' self-service approach goes beyond simply providing users with data access; it focuses on offering them effortless and intuitive tools to seamlessly transform data into valuable information.

And, as one of the key tools to help provide a self service experience is the conversational interaction, I present here some of the new features available in our Cognos 12.0.1 AI Assistant.

Choose your preferred AI insights and share them via email, Slack, or Microsoft Teams.

Another important feature of Cognos Analytics aimed at a self service experience is our AI insights. These are natural language texts generated by our artificial intelligence to elucidate data, pinpoint anomalies, emphasize crucial factors, and aid users in understanding information, even when it's hidden.

In the 12.0 release, we introduced AI insights to the assistant. This eliminates the necessity for users to use Exploration or create a Dashboard in order to access the natural language insights generated by Cognos AI

In 12.0.1 release, the user can select the insights they want to share across the company.

Check in this example, I have an answer with a visualization and insights. I just need to click in Share.

The assistant allows you to share via Email, MS Teams, or Slack. In this example, I will select email

Now I only need to pick the insights I wish to share

Another interesting possibility is to be able to annotate the image, by clicking in "Annotate by clicking here or image".

You can make notes or highlight something in the image.

Then you can simply select the recipients and craft a message

Direct Answer

As a Cognos User, you're familiar with a prominent aspect of our AI assistant—it incorporates a visual representation in each response to facilitate explanations and improve user understanding. However, there are situations when users are looking for a direct and succinct response.

Therefore,  now our assistant automatically identify the questions most inclined to receive direct answers and the ones that are more inclined to receive a complete answer with visualization and insights.

In this example, I queried the assistant with the question: "What was the call count in Atlanta for the last quarter?" In this instance, my focus was solely on Atlanta, so I would likely prefer a straightforward answer rather than a chart comparing call counts in various locations or a breakdown of call counts in Atlanta by month. So the assistant identified this intention and provided a concise response.

Learning Panel integration to demonstrate the usage of Cognos.

The assistant is now integrated with the Learning Panel. With this, the assistant identifies questions related to how to use Cognos Analytics, searches for the topic and related topics in the Learning Panel and opens several suggestions that can help the user.

Take a look at this example where I asked: How to create a dashboard

Cognos will understand your question and suggest you related articles on the Cognos Analytics Learning Panel.

If you still needs help, there is also a link with quick access to the forum. And when you're ready to return to the assistant, just click "Back to the assistant"

New option for adding visualizations to dashboards from the Assistant

The Assistant now offers a new "Add to" possibility to add visualizations to dashboards. This feature allows you to incorporate a visualization into your existing dashboard or create a new one, providing greater flexibility in managing your visual content

Important to say that if you prefer, you can also simply drag and drop a visualization from the Assistant into an open dashboard. When you start dragging, the Assistant panel automatically closes to make it easy for you to position the visualization on the dashboard. After you drop the visualization in its place, the Assistant panel reopens

And What else is coming?

The recent advent of Generative AI and Foundation Models has taken Artificial Intelligence to an unprecedented level, allowing algorithms to understand, transform, predict, summarize, synthesize, translate and generate languages in different domains, with minimal supervision.

Earlier this year, IBM announced the new watsonx, an enterprise-ready AI and data platform designed to multiply the impact of AI across your business. The platform comprises three powerful products: the watsonx.ai studio for new foundation models, generative AI and machine learning; the watsonx.data fit-for-purpose data store, built on an open lakehouse architecture; and the watsonx.governance toolkit, to accelerate AI workflows that are built with responsibility, transparency and explainability.

Know more about watsonx

IBM is investing to bring to the world of Business analytics all the benefits that Generative AI can bring. Through its integration with IBM Generative AI and Foundation Models, Cognos Analytics will enhance the user experience and empower not only technical experts but every user across the organization to be able to transform data into actionable insights. This will create an authentic self-service experience, fostering widespread data utilization.

We will have news about this integration realease very soon, so please stay tuned.
