Introducing the New Fix Strategy for IBM Business Automation Workflow

By TOM HAWRYLAK posted 2 days ago

Is your organization spending too much time managing individual interim fixes for IBM Business Automation Workflow? We have great news.

Starting October 2025, IBM has introduced a new fix strategy for traditional releases of IBM Business Automation Workflow version 24.0.0.0 and later. Instead of applying multiple individual fixes, customers will receive cumulative interim fixes—a single, installable package that includes all necessary updates, security patches, and defect resolutions.

This new approach offers several key benefits:

Simplified maintenance

  • Administrators no longer need to track individual fixes or check for prerequisites and superseded updates. Everything is bundled into one package, released at regular, predictable intervals.

  • Each cumulative fix uses a clear, incrementing identifier (e.g., 24.0.0.0-IF007, 24.0.0.0-IF008, etc.). For version 24.0.0.0, the sequence starts at IF007, aligning with the latest container-based release.

Improved stability and troubleshooting

  • Cumulative fixes are delivered as IBM Installation Manager packages, similar individual interim fixes, ensuring a familiar update experience.

  • By reducing variability across customer environments, cumulative fixes make troubleshooting faster and more consistent.

Comprehensive documentation

  • Each cumulative fix includes a consolidated readme file with update instructions, optional steps, and post-installation guidance. It also lists all included defect resolutions and known issue fixes.

Consistency across offerings

  • Cumulative fixes are aligned across related IBM offerings, including Business Automation Workflow on containers and Cloud Pak for Business Automation. Fixes released at the same time contain similar content across platforms, with only the applicable fixes included for each product.

Security and open source updates

  • Cumulative fixes include updates to open source libraries and dependencies, addressing known vulnerabilities (CVEs) published regularly.

Upgrade flexibility

  • Each cumulative fix includes all updates since the 24.0.0.0 base release. You only need to apply the latest fix in the series.

  • You can also upgrade from a previous release and apply the latest cumulative fix in a single step.

This new strategy is designed to streamline your update process, improve system reliability, and enhance security—so you can focus on what matters most: delivering value through automation. Staying current with cumulative interim fixes reduces the chance of being impacted by a defect that has already been fixed and provides the benefit of having multiple fixes that are tested and delivered together.
