How to use z/OSMF Sysplex Management to manage CFRM policies

z/OSMF Sysplex Management V2R5 provides a new feature to allow the user to manage the Coupling Facility Resource Management (CFRM) policies for the current sysplex (and rolled back to z/OS V2R4 with APAR PH40176).

In the main page of Sysplex Management task, Topology View, the graphic shows all the Sysplexes which are configured in Systems task for management. Right click sysplex name, the action menu of Sysplex is showed. Select CFRM polices link to open CFRM polices view, as shown in Figure 1

A coupling facility resource management (CFRM) policy describes the coupling facilities and structures that can be used in the sysplex. The CFRM policies reside in the active couple data set. From the CFRM Administrative Policies page, user can view and manage the CFRM policies for sysplex.

The CFRM Administrative Policies page identifies the sysplex and its active policy and indicates the date on which the policy was activated.  

Select one policy, right click to open action menu, it allows user to modify, view content, rename, copy, activate and delete the selected policy, as Shown in Figure 2.

Open in CFRM Policy Editor

Click Open in CFRM Policy Editor to open CFRM Policy Editor. User can use it to modify the CFRM policies in the CFRM couple data set.

The CFRM Policy Editor main page displays the following information about the selected policy:

  • Policy name
  • Sysplex name
  • Number of CF structures
  • Number of coupling facilities
  • Tabbed areas for editing the CF structures and coupling facilities for a policy.
  • Task-level actions for the CFRM Policy Editor: Add, Close, and Submit.

The central feature of the main page is the objects table, which displays either CF structures or coupling facilities, depending on which tabbed view is selected for the policy. In the table, user can select actions for editing CF structures and coupling facilities.

In CFRM Policy Editor page, Coupling Facilities tab is default open, as Figure 3. If it is not, Click Coupling Facilities tab to view coupling facilities list.

In a CFRM policy, the CF statement specifies the definition of a coupling facility within the scope of the named policy. The location of the information that is needed to define the coupling facility in a CFRM policy depends on the processor on which the coupling facility is installed. The limit for the number of coupling facilities that can be defined in a policy is established when the CFRM couple data set is formatted. The coupling facility must appear in the preference list of at least one coupling facility structure that is defined within the policy.

On the Coupling Facilities tab, user can Add, Modify, Copy, Rename and Delete coupling facilities for the selected CFRM policy.

User can modify a coupling facility for the selected CFRM policy. To do so, select one CF, open the action menu of the selected policy, click Modify to open a window that user can use to modify the coupling facility, as Figure 4.

In Modify Coupling Facility page, user can edit the value of CF attributes. On completion, click OK to submit, then back to CFRM policies main page.

CF Structures tab

In a CFRM policy, the STRUCTURE statement specifies the definition of a structure within the scope of the named policy. The limit for the number of structures that can be defined in a policy is established when the CFRM couple data set is formatted.

In the CFRM policies main page, click CF Structures tab to open CF structure table list. On this tab, user can Add, Modify, Rename, Copy, and Delete CF structures for the selected CFRM policy.

User can create a CF structure for one or more coupling facilities. To do so, use the Add action in the CF Structures table. Doing so opens a window that user can use to create the new CF structure.

After setting the value of structure attribute, click OK to add the structure, then back to the CF Structures table, showing the new structure.

By selecting one structure, click to open the action menu of the structure, user can select Modify, Copy, Rename or Delete to do corresponding action, as Figure 8.

For CF Structures, User can apply a modification to a set of CF structures at one time. This approach can save user’s time compared to editing structures one by one.

User can select multiple structures that he wants to modify, then click Modify on the taskbar.

Modify Multiple CF Structures page is opened, as Figure 10, in this page, enter values for the attributes, then these values will be applied to the selected CF structures, which are listed under Selected CF Structures to Modify.

By default, user’s changes are applied as absolute values. If user selects the Relative option, the attributes user modifies can increase or decrease by the specified percentage. User can apply a relative change to individual fields or all the selected fields, as Figure 11. Click OK to save the modifications to the structures.

Search and Filter 

In CFRM policy editor, based on Coupling Facility and CF structure tab, user can Search CF or structures according to key word that user inputs in the searching field on the task bar, as Figure 12.

User also can filter to get a set of CF or Structures according to filter condition that user set in the filter filed on the task bar, as Figure 13.

Activate a policy

Now continue to introduce the action of CFRM policies in the CFRM Administrative Policies main page.

Select one CFRM policy, right click to show the action menu, select Activate to open the Activate New Policy window so that user can activate the selected policy.

In the Activate New Policy window, the currently active policy is displayed for your reference. To activate the policy, click Activate. Otherwise, click Cancel to return to the CFRM Administrative Policies page.

This action includes a warning message that user is activating the policy in the sysplex. Be aware that activating the policy will affect sysplex operations.

New a policy

In CFRM Administrative Policies page, click Action and select New to create a new policy.

A CFRM Policy Editor is open, user needs to input policy name, default Coupling Facilities is TEMPCF and default CF structure is TEMPSTRUCT, user can Add, Modify, Rename, Copy and Delete CF or structure according to what system needs.  After setting Coupling Facilities and CF Structures, click Submit to create the policy.
