Unleash the power of automated network observability with IBM SevOne NPM

By Pieter De Villiers posted Thu August 17, 2023 10:35 AM

IBM is redefining what it means to be truly in the network observability space.

We’re extending the value of IBM SevOne Network Performance Management (NPM), with the ability to transform insights into action with an enhanced solution. Available today, IBM SevOne Automated Network Observability can help carry the workload for your organization by automating network observability.

How did we get here?

In a post-COVID world, NetOps teams face many disparate and complex challenges that can impede their ability to configure, manage and maintain networks effectively.

The shift to remote work, increasing adoption of SaaS solutions and migration to hybrid multi-cloud architectures result in fragmented visibility across network resources that enterprise IT owns and those they don’t.  Networks have become increasingly dynamic, evolving at an accelerated pace with even more pressure on teams to deliver optimized performance.

Compounding these challenges is the worsening scarcity of NetOps talent and limited new entrants into the field, necessitating a need to accomplish more with fewer resources.

To do more with less and remove complexities from network management, NetOps teams must leverage enhanced tooling and automation to bridge the gap, empowering them to streamline operations and increase efficiency, through automated network observability.

Organizations can extend the value of SevOne NPM to overcome these obstacles by adding automated network observability into their existing capabilities. Available as a trade-up for existing SevOne NPM users or to new users as a single offering,  IBM SevOne Automated Network Observability delivers market leading network performance management, combined with flexible automation capability for day one value. This enhanced solution will lead to three core value drivers for organizations.

1. Automated network actions based on Machine Learning (ML) observations

SevOne Automated Network Observability can turn ML-driven insights into tangible automated actions, by enabling closed-loop automation for network configuration, provisioning, management, and testing. For example, users can automatically:

  • Modify active, actionable QoS policies,
  • Automate the configuration of NetFlow on Network device,
  • Look for config changes (coinciding with issues/outages),
  • Run additional analytics, including starting high frequency polling,
  • Create ServiceNow tickets with enriched SevOne NPM data.

2. Reduce repetitive tasks through automation

With SevOne Automated Network Observability  low-code workflow automation, NetOps teams can automate repetitive tasks, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency.  Teams can quickly compile workflows from a vast range of out-of-the-box building blocks to significantly reduce dependency on subject matter experts for complex scripts and platform knowledge to build integrations. Automating repetitive tasks helps ensure your teams can focus on higher value endeavours. For example, you can automatically:

  • De-duplicate and update SevOne alerts to ServiceNow.
  • Import device metadata into SevOne NPM such as geo-coordinates.
  • Synchronize SevOne NPM inventory with ServiceNow.
  • Update SNMP community strings on devices.
  • Check Devices Not Monitored Correctly in SevOne NPM.

3. Leverage self-service API-based data extraction

Use pre-built automation workflow templates, downloadable from the IBM TechXchange Community, for self-service data ingestion. Organizations can collect data from diverse sources, including Kubernetes-based systems and IBM Cloud, or create custom workflows. This self-service approach empowers NetOps teams to gather critical network data and make data-driven decisions without the dependency on complex scripts. For example, users can leverage pre-built workflow templates to collect data from:

  • Monitoring a container in SevOne – Openshift,
  • IBM Cloud workloads,
  • KPIs From SevOne Data Insight,
  • Non-standard devices using SevOne NPM deferred data API.

It’s time to turn insights into actions

Navigating the challenges of a post-COVID NetOps environment requires innovative solutions. SevOne NPM Automated Network Observability equips organizations with the tools and intelligence to overcome these challenges easily and effectively.  With pre-built workflow templates from the IBM TechXchange community and 1000s of out-of-the-box building blocks, network automation is more accessible than ever. NetOps teams can enhance efficiency, gain comprehensive visibility, and gain control over their network operations by:

  • Automating actions from ML-based insights,
  • Reduce repetitive tasks through automation, and
  • Leveraging self-service API-based data extraction for comprehensive automation.
